ReearReview lit By Janet ', near Originality, in three different forms, is rife with this week albums by Joe Jackson, Berlin, and the Thompson Twins. There are two meanings for originality. The first, which is one. of Joe Jackson's skills, is the power of originating,, inven- tiveness. The second definition is the quality of being original (which describes Berlin) or novel (what better word to employ when discussing the Thompson Twins). In the past five years North America has had a great influx of Britain's Joe Jackson (who now resides in New York): We've heard hits like Steppin' Out, Is She Really Going Out With Him, and I'm a Man. Now, with the release of his sixth- album, Body and Soul (a product of two years' work), Jackson returns to the charts. Body and Soul brings back the days when the Mafia ran amuck. It contains a big blues sound that will appeal to older audiences. Jackson has a definite ability to sing, not to mention his lyrics. These poems are the ex- pression of human emotions from the fear of a final outcome. (The Verdict) to romantic longing (Happy Ending) to philosophical criticism ( You Can't Get What You Want). Unlike many artists today, Jackson has a distinctly dramatic sound. In fact, he is oc- casionally dramatic to a straining point. In The Verdict, Jackson's voice, with the words not properly enunciated, seems in- substantial while the music drags. However, as the blurb printed on the album's back cover states, Jackson spent much time in his Masonic Lodge/recording t studio to get exactly the sound he wanted. 'Rating: 7 Original in a comparative way is Berlin. This band, which sounds like Kate Bush singing for the Motels, has affrontive lyrics that, fortunately for their sales, arq not as blatant aa -Rough Trade's. With their new LP, Love Lifei,,INE1iJi„has mastered a resplendent sound. Unlike most American bands, Berlin has a European flair in that Terri Nunn's vocals remind one of a pouting French. actress. Their most popular'single to date is No More Words. If you know the song, you know the album. All the songs on Love Life are hauntingly familiar to each other - the beat is the same, the melody is the same, the lyrics are all about love. To make things worse, Nunn buries her lyrics with predatory "who" in Pictures of You that render the words in- discriminate. Rating: 6 Finally, one of the most refreshing bands on the air today, who will be playing in Toronto this month ... ladies and gentlemen, the band who took their name from the blundering brqthers in Herge's Tintin ... the Thompson Twins. The only crticism this album deserves is that the vocals are often unclear. But this is due to production, which unlike Side Kicks, has the'work of Alex Sadkin and Tom Bailey (vocals) . When compared to TT's previous effort, Into the Gap is surprisingly not as punchy, which does not mean it's not as good. Rating: 81/2 ----Congratulations to Harold and Vera Larder on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary Best Wishes will be received from Family and Friends at The Livery, Goderich on Saturday, Sept. 1, 1984 from 8:00 p.m. - 12:00 p.m. Love and Best Wishes from Clement and Eugenia Robert Barbaro Paula Richard Micheal William Nancy Melissa John Vera Nicole Renee Brant LONDON CYCLING CLUB And The GODERICII RECREATION DEPARTMENT Present the difat eel, Raze Sunday, August 26th, 1984 First Race Beginning at 10:00 a.m..
