says Geo Bottrill of Chatham,
Geoff was the instructor atr Goderieh's
very first soccer camp held at Agricultural
Park last Wee front Monday to Friday. The
camp s'''sponsored by Ihit Goderich
Recreaieign Departrment with. so . e costs off-
set by*Ontario Soccer Assoociation..It was
open to area boys and girls aged 7-13 and
attracted10 participants.
Each Participant received a free soccer
ball and sweat -shirt and also had a chance to
earn crests for their skills.
Instruction from Geoff included the basics
in style and technique with as much
individual attention as possible.
Geoff has been playing soccer for 20 years
and has been coaching for the past seven
years since coming to Canada from his
native England. He is the coaching co-
ordinator for the Chatham area and has his
level 3 practical certificate from the Ontario
Soccer Association and his level2 certificate
from the Canadian Coaching Association.
Hehas conducted other soccer camps in
Windsor and'Huntsville and plans to try soon

for a speciali ence which will allow him to
coach' socce and give coaching clihics
anywhere In Canada.
Geoff says soccer is not as popular here as
in Europe because North Americans -like
games with more action and more goals
(like hockey).
"Europeans like to see development on
the field. They don't mind a 1-0 game but.
Canadians' like to see lots of goals and fast
action soN soccer doesn't, seers to hold the
same excitement for them," he explains.
In the United States, says Geoff, soccer
has been moved indoors- and litany of the
rules have been changed to make it more
like hockey.
He sees the sport making slow progress
here though. He says there is a lot of talent
in this country and indeed right in Goderich
among the boys he has worked with. He says
soccer also has the advantage of being a
cheap sport, requiring only a pair of soccer
boots and the money to register with a
league, so it is accessible to many.
Goderich Recreation Director Jane
Netzke says she is not sure whether the
department will sponsor another ' soccer
camp next year. However, if there is one, at
least 16 participants will be required and the
camp will be held in July instead of August.
Goderich teams compete
inn LHZ Sportsfest soccer
Three Goderich soccer teams met with
varying fortunes at the Lake Huron Zone
Sportsfest in Kincardine last Saturday.
The Mosquitoes lost 5-1 to St. Columban in
the championship game. Tim Harrison
scored the Goderich goal. St. Columban
scored three times in the second period of
overtime, after the teams ended regulation
time deadlocked 1-1.
In a first-round game, Goderich beat
Listowel 5-1, with Kelly Lumley, Bob
Lumley; Paul-Hauniitony-Mark-Me'lick-and,
Brian Lane scoring the goals. Mid -fielders
Lonnie Romig and Brian. Lane, right-winger
Tim Harrison and centre -back Keith
Ducharme were outstanding throughout the
tournament. Coach Dan McCallum felt that
his team, the youngest and smallest in the
league, deserved credit for their efforts
throughout the season.
The Pee-Wees beat Port Elgin 5.4, in
another first-round game. Bill Trebish, with
two goals and Greg De Winter, Calvin
Knight and Larry Leppington, with one
each, were the Goderich scorers.
The Pee Wees then.ran up against a very
big and aggressive Listowel team and lost 3-
0. Coach Ted Williams felt that his team's
lack of experience against top class
competition,..was.._the.,. main ,_£a.etQr.. in,,,, their
defeat.
After losing a first round game to Durham
1-0 in a shoot-out, the Squirts won the
consolation final by beating . Listowel 1-0.
Outside -left Mike McBride scored the
Winning goal.
Pee Wees eliminated from
-Baseball Assoc. play -tiffs.
Goderich Legion Pee Wees lost' their
Ontario Baseball Association playoff series
with Listowel, two games to none.
The local team.dropped a 5-4 squeaker in
the opening game, ' played August 8, in
God&ich and then-Ibst a 17-5 slugfest August
.11, in Listowel.
In game one, Listowel scored two runs in
their half of the first inning and Goderich
responded in kind in the bottom of the first.
Derek Jeffers tapped out an RBI single in
that inning.
The teams traded runs again in the fourth
inning, with Listowel getting two, to
Goderich's one. Goderich scored again in
the fifth to tie it up at 4-4, but Listowel broke
the deadlock with a run in the top ,of the
seventh.
Game two was Listowel's game all the
way, as the }some team got ahead early on,
and Goderich never managed to catch up.
The offensive highlight of the game for the
Goderich side, was a third -inning home run
by D. Colquhoun.
Goff Bottrill of Chatham gives instruction to participants in Goderich's week-long soccer
camp which was held last Monday to Friday. Ten boys took advantage of the camp
sponsored by the Goderich Recreation Department and each received a sweat -shirt, soccer
ball and crests. (Photos by Joanne Buchanan)
Roger B Quick wins Ron Feagan Memorial Pace
The feature race on Thursday, August 16
was the icon Feagan Memorial Pace. A late
vet scratch took Crawford McKeen's
Stepalong Joni•out of the race but still left a
vepy competitive field of six horses.
Roger B Quick, a four-year-old horse
owned by John Morrissey' of Grand Bend,
proved to be very tough as he won the
Memorial Pace. Fred Sadler steered Roger
B Quick from wire to wire, going to .the
quarter in 30 seconds, the half in 1:02:2,
three quarters in 1:34 and won in 2:04.
It was nice to see Roger B Quick win the
Memorial Pace as the Morrisseys have been
racing ' regularly this year at Goderich
raceway an because Fred Sadler is one of
Goderich's leading drivers. • -
Roger B Quick's win on Thursday night
boosts his earnings to over $40,000 lifetime.
Roger also has a lifetime mark of 1:59:2 set
this year at Flamboro Downs. •
Several members of the Feagan family
were on hand to present the trophy to the
Morrisseys. A blanket was also given to the
winner, compliments of Equilin Products,
The Memorial Pace was a fine tribute to
the local race driver, Ron Feagan.
The results of the eighth race confirmed
what many already knew, and that is when.
George Lavis and Brad Vanstone bring
Linlor Rodger to Goderich Raceway, the
crowd is assured a winner.

fact, Linlor Rodger set his lifetime mark of

On Thursday, August 16, Linlor Rodger
