The Stratford Festival mowed, today
that Clarence Fountain and the Five Blind
Boys of Alabama and Montreal's Jubilation
Gospel Choir will be the two featured acts of
the Gospel Festival, fourth and final concert
of this season's Festival, Slimmer Concert
scheduled for Monday, Aug. 27, 8 p.m. in t
Festival Theatre.
Clarence Fountain and the Five Bli d
Boys of Alabama have been an endurin
force in the world of gospel music for 45
years. Featuring Clarence Fountain, the
group first met as students at Talladega Col-
lege, Their professional career began at the
Annual Gospel Convention held at Legion
Field in Birmingham, Alabama before an
audience of more than 43,000. Later, they
became the first gospel group to appear at
the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem,
New York City.
The Jubilation Gospel Choir, directed by
Trevor W. Payne, is a 60 -member group
considered to be one of the most versatile
choral groups in Canada today. A recent
feature article in Macleans Magazine
described the Choir's effect on audiences.
"From the moment the choir enters from
the backof concert halls, swaying
rhythmically down the aisle and singing its
standard Highway To Heaven, it invariably
brings audiences to their feet."
Founded in 1974 by Trevor Payne and
Daisy Sweeney (sister of jazz great Oscar
Peterson), the Jubilation Gospel Choir
originally was known as the Montreal Black
Community Youth Choir. Based in Mon-
treal's Union Church, it adopted its new
name in 1982, the same year Union Church
celebrated its 75th anniversary in Montreal.
Choir director Trevor W. Payne is a
former rock musician who fronted his own
group (Trevor Payne and the Triangle) in
the late 1960s and later was a meber of
Mashmakan, a popular Mairea'"g up of
the early 1970s. Today, in addition to
1.eading the Jubilation Gospel Choir, he
heads the music department of John Abbott
College in Montreal.
The mandate of the Jubilation Gospel
Choir is to explore the -long and rich heritage
of Black culture as expressed through
gospel music. The choir comes to Stratford
after 'its' triumphant engagement as the
opening act for the fifth Montreal interna-
tional Jazz Festival.
Other Festival concerts this summer in-
clude the Preservation Hall Jazz Band ( July
23); The Nylons (July 30); and Oscar Peter-
son (August 13). All concerts take place in
the Festival Theatre, beginning at 8 p.m.
