Fearnley, a 22 year-old Toronto entertainer, has been on a one-man crusade to promote and elevate the profile of the Muscular Dystrophy Association and its • major fund-raising arm; the Jerry Lewis Telethon. Armed with an indomitable spirit, limitless energy and a good measure of courage, Fearnley set out from Kenora Ontario in an ultra -light aircraft June 28 and has been criss-crossing the province ever since, making people aware of the crippling disease and the association that battles to find a cure. "I have been a co -host of the telethon in Toronto and I just wanted to make kople aware of the MD association, what they do and what they are about," he explained. "I am also informing people about the Labour Day weekend telethon and how they can make a pledge. The money stays right here, it doesn't go south." An illusionist and escape artist by trade, Fearnley began taking serious flight instruction in January in preparation for the cross -province flight. Having participated in the Toronto segment of the telethon for a few years, he authored the concept of a promotional and awareness tour. Sanctioned by the National Muscular Dystrophy Association and with a host of sponsors, the Flight For Pride was airborn in Kenora June 28 with a goal of promoting the telethon and making 100,000. people aware of muscular dystrophy. Fearnley and his road crew will be guests of honour at the annual Toronto Air Show Saturday, September 1, which•will also mark the end of his journey. After departing from the Kenora-Dryden area, the Flight For Pride followed the Trans Canada Highway to the Ottawa area. From there the crew headed south into Central and Western Ontario. Maintaining constant radio contact with his lead car, Fearnley follows the highways of Ontario at a speed of about 30 miles per hour. While he may now be considered a more than experienced ultra -light pilot, the arduous flight has not been without harrowing moments. A crash at White River sent Fearnley to hospital with a concussion, a twister in Pembroke kept the crew grounded for 24 hours and vandals ripped the tail section of aircraft in Ottawa. While the obstacles provided a formidable challenge, they were all met and dealt with. Two days behind his schedule, Fearnley left Goderich Wednesday, August 15 and was headed for London, Woodstock and Kitchener. Weary, hungry and in need of some minor repairs, the challenges of the flight had failed to dampen the enthusiasm of Rick and his. cw,wlio look forward to the prospect of a hearty welcome in Toronto. Alidthetrip has been worth every mile. "It is a big help when you actually see the people you're helping," he said. "When you • meet an MD victim personally and see the courage they have well, it keeps you going. Jerry Lewis is a great man too who has done a lot. I think the trip has been usccessful." Hunter said it appeared that the development had fallen through and Morrissey now wanted to sell the land back to the town. Since this time, council has accepted a recommendation from the airport committee to buy this pro- perty back''at' the purchase price of $4,000 less money awed to the town, with the tran- saction to close in January of 1985. A discussion then occured regarding the fate of the old green terminal building at the airport. •Committee members, in general, 1. agreeu that the building is an eye -sore and possibly unsafe and should therefore be demolished as soon as possible. Secretary Hunter was authorized to write to the county and ask if they are prepared to vacate the building as it is not being used for the pur- pose for which it was intended. The government weather' station at the airport will be moved into the new terminal in the early fali. The airport manager and secretary were authorized to discuss the use of the old weather station building with various aircraft -related in- dustries and report back on their findings. • VOTE VALERIE BOLTON NDP IN HURON -BRUCE "As a mother I can stand up for motherhood Issues.
