THEATRE REVIEW
leseiemite
BY JOANNE BUCHANAN
Playhouse II's final show of the season,
ONCE MORE! WITH FOOLING!, is a
musical trip down memory lane.
This delightful bit of nostalgia was
compiled and staged by Jack Northmore
(Norman Tha.r/ in the Playhouse
production of ..ON.. GOLDEN POND last
year). Northmore, Hank Stinson, Marcia
Tratt and Denise Baillargeon make up the
talented cast of the musical revue which
opened August 8. They are backed by an
equally talented trio of musicians, Michael
Mulrooney on keyboards and bass, Sean
Mulrooney on guitars and bass, and John
Thompson on drums and keyboards.
'They Don't Write Songs Like That
Anymore,' is the energetic opening dumber
and throughout the remainder of the
production, this 'energy level never wanes
(despite the heat in the building! )
In the first act, the cast members sing and
dance their way through the depression,
prohibition, the Bit Band era and World
War, II. One of the highlights of this act is a
medley entitled 'Thirties Trash' which
Northmore describes as 'truly regrettable
songs' from the thirties. This is repeated in
the second act with `Forties Trash'.' Songs
like `M,airsy Doats', 'The Flat Foot Floogie'
and 'One Meat Ball' may not be classics but
they are catchy ditties that bring smiles of
remembrance to the audience.
Also in Act Two, are numbers entitled
'Hooray for Hollywood', 'Latin Medley',
'Plump Medley', 'Bing', 'Party Pieces', and
`Dixie'. All of this brings us right up to the
rock 'n roll era where the production stops.
Besides music and dancing, FOOLING!
(as the title suggests) has lots of comedy
and even a few history lessons. In the
segment on World War II, we are .again
reminded of our Canadian inferiority
complex as we try to compete with the
Americans and the British. And, lo and
behold, we find out that some very well-
known•tunes have actually been penned by
Canadians themselves (but of course, we all
knew that, didn't we? ! )
My favorite.. segment of the show was the
'Boogie Woogie' segment. But there is

Marcia Tratt and Denise Baillargeon. This is the tenth production of ONCE MORE! WITH
FOOLING!! Jack, Marcia and Denise have just finished another production of'the show last
week at the Kawartha Festival in Lindsay.
• enough variety in this production to appeal
to everyone—from Westerns to a Bing
Crosby salute—it's all there.
A simple set and effective use of,
spotlighting by Claude Guilmain and
splashes of bright red costuming by Kelly
Sullivan, help add appeal to an already
appealing show.
If you 'have not been, this is your last
chance to go to a 1984 production at, the
Playhouse II cabdret theatre. FOOLING!
runs until August 18.
Play set in 1845 Huron County to be
performed by Experience '4 students
Move over Blyth and Grand Bend:
Goderich has its own summer theatre!
Suppose you fell asleep ong day and awoke
to find yourself in the 1840s! Think of the
people you would meet, the places you
would go:and the things you could do'
This is exactly what happens to Karen
Ferguson, a 17 -year-old student, and her
adventures and experiences with the Huron
County residents of 1845 are the subject of
the exciting historical play "Nostalgia", be-
ing presented August 2:3, 24 and 25 at the
Livery Theatre in Goderic 1.
Karen finds herself in the midst of barn
dances, shivarees, quilting bees and even a
Temperance meeting! She meets many in-
teresting characters - both factualwand fic-
tional, and even gets to play "Cupid" in a
nineteenth century romance.
"Nostalgia" is noire than just a play set in
this area 140 years ago.. Written and resear-
ched by four students ori an Experience '84
project - Elizabeth F'rayne, Kathy Mac-
Donald, Kent Milburn and Heather -Ann
Stapleton - and performed by these four and
other area volunteers, "Nostalgia" is sure
to be appealing entertainment for children
and adults from not only Huron ('oust\ but
ever where'
