LOOKING BACK
Contractor Piggott has a steam shovel on
the railroad track here, and considerable
material for starting the work of
constructing the Guelph and Goderich Road.
The contractor is offering two dollars per
day for good men, and we understand a
large number of track hands were to reach
Goderich yesterday evening, so that a big
start would be made today.
Mr. George W. Thomson informs us that
his brother James, formerly town clerk of
Goderich,-now of Dakota, has sent him a
cheque for $100 for the furnishing of a cot in
the Alexandra Hospital, which will be paid
over as soon as the hospital is ready.
T.D. Stewart of Toronto has installed a
five horse power gasoline engine in Smith's
bakery which will furnish the power for a
mixer. Mr. Smith will also add a loaf
moulder to,bis plant, making it one of the
most modern outside the cities.
D. Sare, proprietor of the Colborne Hotel,
is making extensive improvements to the
property inside and out. This old established
hostelry continues to class among the best.
The cabin cruiser Kay Mar of Trent,
Michigan was pinched against the dock here
by the steamer Hibou on the weekend. Some
paint was rubbed off the cruiser's rail and
she commenced to leak badly but did not
sink.
The mild form of milk . war which had
existed in Goderich for some months ended
recently when a new scale of prices went
into effect. All distributors agreed to charge
nine cents per quart and five cents per pint
in future.
About 10,000 people attended the Goderich
Trade Fair this year, it is estimated by
Trade Fair officials. Rain on Saturday was
blamed for the fact that there was no
appreciable increase in attendance from
last year.
Councillor May Mooney made history
Friday when she became the first woman
ever to act in the capacity of mayor and
preside over ay town council meeting in
Goderich. She filled the chair for Mayor
Ernie Fisher who was absent. There was
more than a little sentiment attached to the
occasion since her late husband, D.D.
Mooney, sat in the same chair when he was
mayor of Goderich.
Pouring of the reinforced concrete
structure for the new classroom wing being
built at GDCI started today. The steel joists
for the cafeteria and gymnasium are
scheduled to be erected next week.
Huron County Warden William Jewitt was
guest of honor when the new $90,000
Hamilton Motel on Bayfield Road was
officially opened Friday evening.
The Huron County Board of Education
agreed recently to deed just over an acre of
land at Holmesville Public School to the
Township of Goderich provided the township
use the land for a proposed community
centre.
Local organizations and individual people
alike have quickly come to the aid of the
several thousand residents affected by last
week's , devastating tornado that swept
through Woodstock. Even though it's a busy
time of the year for Huron County farmers,
many have already volunteered to go down
and help with the clean-up of the estimated
$150 million damage caused by the storm
August 7.
Acts of vandalism against Huron County's
28 schools cost the county board of education
just under $10,000 in the first six months of
1979. That startling figure was given to the
board Monday night along with another
surprising statistic. Just under one-third of
the vandalism occurred in Clinton where
Central Huron Secondary School was the
main target.
More women
encouraged
to be police
Solicitor General George Taylor and OPP
Commissioner Archie Ferguson said recent-
ly they were delighted with the results of a
campaign designed to encourage more
women to seek out careers as police of-
ficers.
•'A provincial lour conducted by Con-
stable Sherry Baker has been an
outstanding success in attracting women
applica.nts,.interested in police careers,"
Taylor said.
Constable Baker, an OPP officer for 10
years, was recently namea Affirmative Ac-
tion Manager for the Ontario Ministry of the
Solicitor General. The OPP is part of that
ministry.
Commissioner Ferguson had said before
Constable Baker's tour that in the 75th an-
niversary year of the OPP, a priority would
be to attract an increased number of women
candidates to apply to the OPP.
"Constable Baker's tour has shown that
the interest is there," Commissioner
Ferguson said, noting that the number of ap-
plications from women has increased by 170
per cent for the first six months of 1984 as
compared to the same period in 1983.
Solicitor General Taylor noted that the
percentage of women applicants for OPP
policing jobs has increased from less than
nine per cent to 21 per cent this year.
"This is a welcome indicator of increasing
interest by young women in what is a
challenging and rewarding career oppor-
tunity," the Solicitor General said.
Commissioner Ferguson said that no
quota for the number of female recruits has .,
been set, and the Force wants the best
