An antique show and sale was held at the Livery last Friday and Saturday. Here, one of the
18 exhibitors who attended, shows some of her pieces to an interested buyer. The annual
show and sale originated with the Bluewater Centre volunteers but when the Centre was
closed, the Goderich Arts Foundation picked it up. The Foundation plans to hold another
show next year. (Photo by•Joanne Buchanan)

Dear Editor,
An open letter to Chief King:
We would like to congratulate your
department on the recent announcement
that there will be an enforcement of seat
belt regulations.
It is important for parents to protect their
children frond injury in all situations and we
are concerned about small children who
continue to stand up in cars and trucks.
Thank you for your interest in the protec-
tion of all citizens in the community.

DearEditor,
The final weeks of the election campaign
are here: The nuclear arms race remains
the most important issue. The campaign
",anada for the Freeze" is gaining momen-
tum. Over the past few days, Senior Liberal
officials, Jean Chretien and Iona Cam-
pognola, have rejected the official Liberal
party's policy and have supported "Canada
for the Freeze". Hence they have joined the
growing ranks of enlightened Canadians
who want to halt the global nuclear arms
race. What does "Canada for the Freeze"
mean?
If the next federal government contains a
majority of MPs who support "Canada for
the Freeze", such a government would urge
that N.A.T.O. requests that the two super-
powers commit to a complete halt to the
testing, production and deployment of all
nuclear weapons and their delivery
. systems. In' essence, "the freeze" would
STOP the nuclear arms race in its tracks, It
is absolutely essential to realize that the
freeze would be mutual..In the world, the
U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. would
sirrrultaneously- , freeze their nuclear
arsenals and programs. It is very
misleading, when certain politicians imply
that the freeze would be "unilateral" or
"one-sided".
It is absolutely essential to realize that
such a freeze would be verifiable. Both the
U.S.A. and the U.S.S.R. must be assured
that the other side is living up to its end of
the freeze arrangement. Because a freeze is
a total halt to all aspects of the nuclear arms
race, it would be easier to "verify" with
surveillance .satellites than other kinds of
arms control agreements ( which only
restrict the numbers of certain types of
weapons ).
You might ask "What: about the Rus -
LETTERS
sians?". The Soviet Union, at least for the
moment, seems prepared to accept -a freeze
agreement with the United States. They
have voted in, favour. of the freeze three
times at the United Nations, and have
publicly expressed their support for the
freeze concept. We may. not care for the
Soviet social and value system'', but that
does not mean we should ignore them when
they are' willing to take a major step
towards world peace.
How can you, a citizen of Canada, pro-
mote "Canada for the Freeze" and hence
make your contribution to halting the
nuclear arms race'? By lobbying all three
candidates in our constituency, and asking
them if they are for "the freeze". If they say
"yes", thank them for taking their stand. If
they say "no", supply them with the over-
whelming arguments that support "the
freeze".
Further details about "the freeze" are
available in a iYamphlet "Canada for the
Freeze" which is published by Operation
Dismantle - one of many' Canadian anti-
nuclear groups. Copies of this pamphlet
may be picked up at my office, during office
hours.
And too, if you want to participate in pro-
moting world peace and halting the nuclear
arms race, act today and lobby your local
candidates. If they do not hear from us, they
may conclude that this important issue does
not concern us.
In the name of peace,
Jim Hollingworth.
Commercialism doesn't
become Papal visit here
Dear Editor,
I am getting just a little.bit more than fed
up with the shenanigans and commer-
cialism surrounding the Pope's visit to
Canada next month. I realize he is a heavy,
being the number one representative of the
big guy upstairs with the G on his t -shirt,
however, when I hit my neighbourhood
Macs to get a pack of weeds to soothe my
shattered nerves and give nay poor lungs a
road test, just why should I have to see can-
dies with his face staring up at me try:1g to
make me feel guilty for notbuying him.
There are spoons, mugs; calendars,
brochures and all sorts of salable objects
with his smiling portrait, saying take me
home. I cannot understand the policv of
some merchants. If this isn't subliminal
advertising at its worst then just what is?
Granted the last twenty years or so our
code of life has changed drastically and
morals now are no different than when the
Romans were on the top of the heap and look
what happened to thein. They went broke. -
The lions ate up all their prophets. This is
conunercialism in its lowest form.

Really now!! How am I supposed to sleep
after I say my prayers, climb under the
covers, and have him staring down at me
from the top half of a calendar which is
nothing but a measurement of time until we
knock off this handfull of clay called a
planet anyways. Millions of dollars are be-
ing spent capitalizing on his visit and if this
isn't a major flaw or crime then just what
is?
I have just finished reading the:number
two bestseller book "In God's Name" by
David Yallop as listed in Time magazine,
Aug. 4th edition and if this isn't irony well
now I just may be missing something. One
thing is certain, you won't catch me at
Downsview airport next month being bless-
ed by him. His presence and warmth cer-
tainly might be hypnotic. but somehow stan-
ding on or beside a runway being blessed
isn't my cup of tea or gateway to heaven.
Mind you, with my luck when 1 get to the big
gate, there will be an apostle with al -full
up" or "no vacancy" sign - it figures.
