"We've been a disadvantage for seiveral
years because we haven't been able to load
shi p,s to capacity. Now we will be able to
load ships to 90 per cent capacity at the
existing, site and then complete the load
with a `smallezt loading spout down by
Captain p'ats."
The creation of a, new, , Zliarbpur,, oa the
north side of the salt mine' means that
Domtar could load two ships and it will
also help relieve the conflict that existed in
the harbour with grain and salt boats
trying to load and manoevre.
Because the channel here did not extend
to the necessary depth of 27 feet, grain
ships were leaving harbour were
underfilled by as much as 4,000 metric
tonnes per load. The company could
improve itsshipping by 10 per cent and the
federal government could improve on the
wharfage fees by the same amount.
The seaway depth harbour north of the
mine could mean more jobs and
expansion. The company recently opened
its third shaft a cost of more than $35
million and there were plans far the
construction of an evaporator plant at the
site at a cost of $25 million.
Domtar has shipped an average 1.5
million tonnes by vessel annually and that
could increase to 3.3 million tonnes
annually with the new harbour. More than
two-thirds of that shipment, valued at $55
million, would be destined for the United
States.
While the construction and expansion
project will have definite benefits for the
town of Goderich, the $17 million is more of
an investment for Transport Canada than
an expenditure.
The port of Goderich .is 'already the
largest revenue producing federal port in
Ontario and it ranks as high as fourth in
Canada. Wharfage charges here are
among the highest and generate a
substantial income.
The town will also realize the benefit of
reclaimed land along the north side of the
salt mine. A precious commodity on the
lakeshore, the land could be used for
storage facilities and the town has had
inquiries about the project.

the port requirements of the Bruce Energy

that Transport Canada has prepared a
