Huron Farm News
Weed Alert
program
continues
Each year, farmers across Ontario are
challenged by new appearing weeds, her-
bicide weeds and the spread of potential
weed problems.
The control of these weeds requires early
detection of their spread and adequate con-
trol.
To monitor these potential new weed pro-
blems for farmers, the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food operates the Weed
Alert Program each summer.
In Huron and neighbouring counties in
Western and Central Ontario, Barbara
Westfall has been appointed as Weed Mert
Co-ordinator. Ms. Westfall is identifying
new weeds and their spread to alert resear-
chers and farmers to potential weed pro-
blems.
The co-operation of farmers is a vital part
of the . success of this program. Farmers
who find new weeds in the fields, or in fence
rows and other areas, should contact the
local Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and
Food office to report such weeds.
Together, new weeds can be quickly
eradicated before they spread.

Farm Management Specialist.

Murphy's Laws of Combining
Ever have one of those days of combining
when everything seems to go wrong? At
least you can take comfort in the fact that
you're not alone. An Alberta farmer, after a
bad day of combining, wrote what he called
"Murphy's Laws of Combining". Most
people will see themselves as they read the
following list.
1. If anything can go wrong it will, at night.
2. If several belts run off the same shaft, the
inside one will break.
3. If all the wrenches are carried in the
combine, the one required for an adjustment
will be home in the shop.
4. If the battery, generator )alternator
work fine all day, they will immediately
cease to do so as soon as the lights are
turned on.
5. If a serious breakdown occurs, it will be
after five o'clock Friday.
6. If 'the bin gets frill, the truck will have
most of a load, and the combine wllll be at
the far end of the field with a full hopper.
71 If a breakdown occursi it will always be at
the farthest point from a vehicle.
8. When repairs are being made, the least
accessible nut and bolt will be the hardest to
turn.
9. If parts are dropped, the smallest piece
will fall in the thickest stubble.
10. If auger engines give trouble, It will be at
harvest, and then run perfectly at all other
times.
