Father Edwin C. Garvey
Priest celebrated .50th
anniversary of ordination
Father Edwin C. Garvey C.S.B., M.A.,
Ph.D., of Huston, Texas celebrated the 50th
anniversary of his ordination to the
priesthood at a mass of thanksgiving held at
St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church,
Kingsbridge on Sunday, August 5. A
reception for family and friends followed at
the Garvey Homestead, Ashfield Township.
A native of Kingsbridge, Father Garvey is
the son of the late Thomas Garvey and
Margaret Donnelly. He is one of a family of
11 children and the younger of two brothers
who became Bascilian priests. Father
Wilfrid Garvey died in 1930.
He received his early education at S.S. No.
2, Ashfield and St. Joseph's School, Ashfield
Township.
Since 1968 Father Garvey has been on the
faculty of the University of St. Thomas,
Houston, Texas, where he has been
professor of philosophy until his recent
retirement.
Following postgraduate studies, he began
his teaching career at Assumption College,
Windsor in 1937 where he was stationed. for
24 years. During these years he directed a
Labour School at the College and instructed
Labour leaders in the Papal Encyclicals
dealing with Labour.
-From 1961 he spent three years as

for the kill. It was rather larger in front with
a big dorsal fin and a fluke sticking up
behind. I reached for my telescope. There
are no whales in the Great Lakes.
A sailboat floating upside down - which it
was - looks very different,. not like its real
self. There was not very much that the
rescuers in their power boats could do to
help. The sailboat skipper was in the water,
climbing up on the keel, trying to get his
boat upright. Every time he did so, the wind
blew it over again.
We were wondering about hypothermia -
the skipper was rather a long time in the
very cold water. We were also wondering if
he couldn't uncleat his sheets so that the
sails would not catch the wind each time he
turned•it over. It's easy to -he a critic.
Eventually our sailor climbed into one of
the waiting craft which took the sailboat in
tow and dragged it upside down into the lee
of the land. There he was able to invert it,
bail it out, and beach it. A minor summer
mishap ended without tragedy.
I was thinking about that boat being
towed, all standing and ready to sail, but
upside down. Would the fish suppose that at
last someone had put things right, and that
really all the other boats are wrong way up?,
And is this a parable of our world?
To be converted is literally to be turned
around the right way. The right way, that is,
according to God's perspective which is not
necessarily your or my view of things. In
HIS opinion should we continue the -way we
are going?
I suspect that we are in danger of spiritual
hypothermia.
