Nancy1'isher is her assistant, she and Debi Moore are paid by the town of Goderich. And Elizabeth Bundy, the fourth worker, is hired through the Southwestern Ontario Tourist Association (SWOTA). The above scenario is not so farfetched, according to these four workers. They say that tourists often do ask if there is a McDonald's in Goderich; in fact, it is one of the most common questions they get. Another common question is whether there is any accommodation available "on the water." The hostesses say that it is fortunate lately on weekends if there is accommodation at all. Finding places to stay is really getting to be'a problem, and for the past couple of weekends everything is booked up at least by suppertime on Saturday_ The travel centre has.fa list .of people in the area who offer bed -and -breakfast to tourists, and even those are being booked up. If nothing else is available, the only alternative is to send the tourists on to Kincardine or Clinton where there might still be vacancies, The hostesses also said they have been told that all the accommodation in Goderich is already booked solid for the long Labour Day weekend. A third question they are often asked iS whether the salt mine gives tours, which it does not. And a lot of tourists come in wondering where the beer and liquor stores are in town. That is a question they often seem embarrassed about asking. The tourist centre is open every day of the week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. It has been very busy there this summer, with an estimated 500 parties visiting the centre each week. That translates in .o well over 1,000 tourists a week. pebbie, who worked at the centre five years ago, says that it's a lot busier now than it ever was then. American tourists are very common at the booth; over half of the people who come in are Americans, say the hostesses. Canada is a favorite vacation spot especially now for Americans because they get such a good exchange rate on their money. And the Bicentennial activities In Ontario have been a big draw for American tourists. People seem to be split equally as to whether they are planning to stay in Goderich for a while, or whether they are just passing through on the way to somewhere else. Although the Goderich booth is a member of the Southwestern Ontario tourist association, most travellers ask for information on places to the north of Goderich like Sauble Beach and Tobermory. The booth has pamphlets COME CELEBRATE the 1 Oth ANNIVERSARY OF The CANDI,ELIGHT (RESTAURANT & TAVERN AUGUST 9, 10, 11, 12 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday) THURSDAY,AUGUST 9 - 11:30am to 4:30pm COFFEE 1O4 cUP BIRTH DAYCAKE AND COFFEE 504 THURSDAY and FRIDAY - 12 NOON TO 2 PM 10th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL BUFFET $340 • Hot Table, Salad Bar, Dessert Table, Beverage Ati•rri. In front is Elizabeth Bundy, and left to right behind her are assistant supervisor Nancy Fisher, supervisor Debbie Shaddlck and Debi Moore. The centre is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days of the week until Lab dr Day. (photo by Darrell Kloeze) and information on vacation spots and points of interest from all over Ontario. The tourist counsellors have a number of tasks other than welcoming visitors to Goderich. They will give guided tours of the town tp bus groups if they are interested; they also have some paperwork to do. . The town of Goderich has bought part of a full page ad for Southwestern' Ontario in the Detroit Free Press .every weekend during the summer, and many interested people write asking for more information on the town. The tourist counsellors send a package of information to everybody who asks for it, and they say they send an average of 50 packages a week in response to the Detroit newspaper ad. The centre has -received guests not only from Canada and the U.S., but from Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Australia, and Egypt, to name a few. Of course, the hostesses have their fair share of amusing anecdotes about tourists who really do not know anything'abo it the country. Everybody asks for a road map of Canada, and the hostesses tell them maybe they would be better off ,to start with a map of Ontario. They meet a number of people who have little idea of the distances involved to get to the places they have heard about, whether it be Sudbury or the Rocky Mountains. • But there are the good parts about the job too, and top on the list are the people who really appreciate the friendly service and the pretty town. People have commented on how nice the flowers are in town, and how clean the streets are. One man, they say, noticed there were no garbage cans in town (or did not know where to look for them). "Doesn't anybody live here?" he asked. ' • The tourist centre also offers information about other tourist spots in Ontario for people who do live here, as well, as for visitors who are planning further adventures after their rest in Goderich.
