'n About
with Martha
While discussing places to see in our area,
right away I mentioned driving out the the
Little Lakes. One lady said, "How do you get
there, Martha?" = and I figured she was just„
trying to be funny - so I started to tell them
and got lost at the top of the hill! Why do I
have such a blockage about that road.
The main thing I have to remember is to
turn off the road before - BEFORE - I reach
the ZONNEVELD Barn -you can't miss it -
but don't pass it. Does, that make sense? -
Noa!
Well, from here, Goderich, I turn left at
Tommy. McLeans' house onto the road to
Benmiller-about three miles out on Highway
8. You stay RIGHT until you cross the
bridge and come to - which way do you want
to go? Right turn takes you sooner or later to
Holmesville. Turn left and you come to the •
kids' ball diamond, left with the church on
the right side. TURN RIGHT. •
You go almost to the end of THAT road -
nearly to Zonneveld's' big BARN, when
you see a gravel road on your right - GRAB
it! Now THAT is a country road. Just keep
going.
No, you can't get lost at this point as -long
as you keep going straight ahead. After
many ups and downs, you will see the road
climb half way to the sky and you keep go-
ing.
When you reach the top, you find the
coolest, shadiest spot in Ontario and I think
those big old Maples are nearly 100 years
old. This is where .there is a little garage
close to the road and a small house near it.
The barn and other buildings are on a lower
level and you will see the Maitland River
Valley as you have never seen it before.
There is a very sharp turn ahead of you, so
get over on your side of the road. Oh, - there
were geese behind that little house at one
time - but THAT is another story I'll pro-
bably repeat someday!
The road ahead, now, is just as uppity as
the one behind you - but just keep going - it
must be a couple of miles or more when you
suddenly feel the road has dropped down in
:front of you.
At this point, I could see the turn into the
Little Lakes - but I had forgotten how
straight down this section of road happened
to be and I had put on the brakes, then sat
T1"tei-e` for` a few kecon 'tilenleC'the car just
slide down to the entrance.
It was so pretty! On both sides of the road
were bright sunny orange lilies, blue
chicory and another •big bright flower. I
wondered if someone had gone to all the
trouble to make this entry beautiful for us. If
they did - "Thank you very much."
The first time I had seen the Little Lakes,
about 1947, I had been surprised by the one
beautiful lake reflecting all the lovely trees
on the hill beside it and the array of turtles
sunning on a big old fallen tree trunk. In the
little cedars (I think) all dying because they
were in a soggy bog. I hated to see so many
little trees just "almost dead".
So, the years have passed (rapidly) and a
few years ago, the road between the lakes
had a nice facelift and I think they not only
lifted the road - took the gully out of it - but
they must have made it possible for that bit
of a marsh to become a real Little Lake -
with WATER in it! So it, too,' grows more
beautiful each year.
You have to go on a bit before you can'
park for a few seconds and look into the
front ends of both Lakes. Behind the soggy
one, the land rises and you can look as far
back as the road on the top of the hill -where
the geese may be.
I thought at one time there was going to be
a spot where one could pull off and sit and
soak up a bit of that soft quiet. I noticed a
lane leading into the bush, it seemed to be
well trampled- and tempting - and cool look-
ing. I hope it CAN be used, it would be a
lovely, back to nature park.
Well now let's carry on down that road.
Farmland both sides, then you see a sign
"B. Pownall Garrett" and the lane - a long
one, leads to a lovely old stone house on the
edge almost of the `no-seeum' river. This is
private property..
Just ahead of you - look DOWN - you're
looking over the top of a bridge, BALL'S
BRIDGE, an . oldie. I hope they leave it -
foreverr as I think it will last that lon4
This is where we saw the blue hein and I
stopped the car and we sat and watched it
circle around, then fly under the bridge -
then I looked up - into the mirar - there
were four or five ears behind me waiting for
me to move - and I did - in a hurry! Anyway,
they didn't blow their horns or swear at me.
At the other side of the bridge, the road is
really bumpy and steep! When you reach
the top, turn left and you will see another
fine old stone house. A century or Heritage
Home 1 believe.
I recall one time Lo -o -ng ago, a nice lady
from London worked very hard and turned
back the years with the right furnishings,
lovely quilts, EVERYTHING - then invited
you to come and enjoy it - which we did and
loved it. A little sign said, "Now go to ,
another fine old stone house for a nice cup
o'tea and honiemade bread and jam."
Well now, THAT was Mrs. Garrett's Cen-
tury Home and while you looked around, the
tiny loaves of bread finished baking and it
was served with farm fresh butter and small
pots of homemade jam made from the wild
fruits of the countryside. BEAUTIFUL! A
TASTE OF THE WILD was only one of Mrs.
Garretts fine books on nature's bountiful
fruits. WILD, That is! Her books are still on
the market.
Enjoy these lovely days.
