BY SKIP GILLHAM
The eteran bulk carrier Elmglen has
became the first la ker to be towed away for
scrapping this year. It arrived at the Lake
Erie community of Port Maitland on May 3.
I';lmglen trade but one visit to Goderich.
'this occurred in December 1982 but she will
likely be remembered locally for visits
under two other names
'='his was once the -Queen of the Lakes".
She as launched at Ecorse, Michigan, in
1909 as Shenango Built to a length of 606 feet
184.71 metres overall, no ship on the Great
Lakes was longer at the tune of con-
struction.
Not only was slit' big but this vessel was
beautifully finisher) in the interior. The
cabins and guest ac'c'ommodations were
done in fine wood and the guest area even in-
cluded a fireplace. The ship was intended to
host guests of the owning Shenango Furnace
Company and she proved to be both a good
host and a good carrier.
The Shenango hauled ore or coal most of
the time and was a success long after newer
carriers surpassed her size The original tri-
ple expansion engine was replaced with a
4,400 horsepower steam turbine in 1952,
otherwise she changed ver} little.
In 1958 the vessel Was sold to the
American Steaship Company and renam-
ed B.W. I)mruc'kenrruller Among her new
duties was the occasional call at Detroit to
load new automobiles on deck for delivery
up the lakes.
After two years of retirement at Buffalo,
the ship resumed t ailing in 1964 as A.T.
Lawson of Wilson'Vla Jne Transit
It passed to the tnsman fleet in 1972 and
their S & E Shipping Subsidiary in 1974 while
retaining her name.
Late in 1975 the freighter was sold to the
quickly expanding Silo River Company
Robert Pierson, the owner, renamed her
George G. Henderson for Canadian flag ser-
vice in 1976.
She began in include Goderich in her
travels, calling here to load corn for St.
Lawrence ports. After 1979 she returned
here as Soo River's Howard F Andrews.
When Soo River went into receivership in
1982, their vessels had to be sold and this
ship became Flmglen of P & H Shipping
After about four months of service, the ship
laid up at Port Colborne and then was towed
to Toronto at the start of the 1983 season. She
never ran again.
Shiphreakers at Port Maitland will soon
reduce this 75 -year-old hull to scrap but she

names.
