Chariie Young nt living u to his name
As. Goderieh's oldest resident, you might
say Charlie Young's surname is a bit, of a
nzisnomer.
Charlie celebrated his 102nd birthday last
Thursday afternoon with relatives and
friends in the garden of the Victoria Street
home which he had built for himself and his
wife in 1927. The home now belongs to
Charlie's good friends, Vern and Kitty Smith
and Charlie resides at Maitland Manor.
Charlie Young was born in Colborne
Township on July 25, 1882 to Mr, and Mrs.
Richard Young. He worked for a short time
as a deliveryman in Chicago and as a
carpenter in Detroit before settling down to
a 40 -year career as a millwright at Purity
Flour Mills in Goderich. When he retired at
the age off 70, he continued to work as a
carpenter for many years.
In September of 1976, Charlie and his wife,
the former Freda Walter, celebrated their
73rd wedding anniversary. Freda died the,
following April.
Although in a wheelchair and- hard of
hearing, Charlie enjoys fairly good health
and an alert mind. Recently he was taken on
a drive around Goderich and commented
that the old town has changed so much over
the years, he hardly recognizes it anymore.
He also said he felt the People Store block
was greatly improved by the new storefront.
Charlie 'and his wife never had any
children but he still gets lots of visits from
nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.. Oh
hand to help him celebrate his birthday last
week were his wife's nephew Allen Trow of
Chatham and two cousins, Marjorie Jackson \
and William Young, both of Goderich.
Mayor Eileen Palmer. dropped by to offer
her congratulations and Victoria 'Street
United. Church sent flowers. All the usual
birthday greetings were received from
provincial and .federal Politicians and Kitty
Smith provided birthday cake and tea.
