Goderich Squirts lose two close games
The Goderich Squirst lost two close
baseball games last week as they were
defeated by Teeswater, 12-11 and Wingham,
11-9.
In the Goderich-Teeswater game played
in Goderich, it was Jason Pearson who stood
out offensively, scoring three runs.
Teeswater waste little time as they had
their bats swinging from the opening pitch.
They scored two runs and left a player on
third base.
Kevin Moss was the only Goderich player
to get on base during the bottom half of the
inning, however, first base was as far as he
could get.
Goderich's defence did not allow any runs
in the second inning but scored one run
during their half. Pearson took four balls for
a walk and turned it into a run.
Goderich could not keep the Teeswater
bats silent in the third inning as four more
runs were scored. Unfortunately for
Goderich, their bats could not reply as they
headed into tht'- fourth inning down by five
runs.
Both teams left players on base during the
fourth inning, out un the fifth, Goderich's
defence held their opponents off while the
offence scored two runs. Pearson and Jason
Fagan made the score stand at 6-3.
Teeswater came back to score one run in
-the sixth, but Goderich answered with seven
runs of their own. Jamie Stanely, Lonnie
Rumig, Jason Cook, Moss, Mark Phillips,
Pearson and Jason Fagan scored the runs.
Ryan Fagan was left on third base, and
Chris Clements on second.
TeeswateF came to life in the seventh
inning once again, scoring five runs for a 12-
10 lead. Goderich fought back with a run by
Sean O'Brien, but the tying and winning
runs (Doug MacDonald and Jamie Stanley)
were left on second and third. The game
ended 12-11 in favour of Teeswater.
W INGHAM 11- GODERICH 9
Wayne Pellow earned the most runs for
Goderich as he crossed home plate twice.
Goderich jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in
the top of the first inning -with Pellow's run.
Moss was left on third, Phillips on second
and Fagan on first. The Goderich defence
held Wingham scoreless.
° Bart Drennan scored one run for Goderich
in the second inning, but Goderich also
allowed one run for a 2-1 score.
In the third inning, Goderich went to work
scoring three runs. Pellow, Pearson and
Moss each crossed home plate. Moss hit a
triple to drive his teammates home.
Wingham matched Goderich's performance
by also scoring three runs in the inning.
With a close 5-4 score in Goderich's
favour, the • Wingham defence became
stronger, forcing three up and three down.
Goderich also held their opponents
scoreless.
Goderich's Chris Clements scored a run to
give his team a two run lead. Howver, the
lead was short lived as Wingham scored
four runs, making the score 7-5 for them.
Goderich regained the lead in the sixth
inning by scoring three runs. Phillips,
Fagan and Stanley crossed the plate to
regain the lead.
Wingham once again stole the lead, and
the game, by scoring three runs in the sixth
and holding Goderich scoreless in the
seventh. Goderich headed home with a 10-9
Ioss.
Local Midgets take Dashwood 4-3
A close game was played between the
Goderich Midgets and Dashwood last
Sunday as Goderich came away with a 4-3
win.
The game was scoreless until the fourth
inning when Dave Almasi crossed the plate.
Also scoring a run that inning was Scott
Stokes, as Goderich took a 2-0 lead.
Pete Nivins scored the lone Goderich run
in the fifth inning, however, Dashwood
countered with two runs of their own to
threaten Goderich's lead.
Goderich scored their final run in the sixth
inning when Darryl Black hit a double and
then made it home on Stakes' double. Stokes

was then thrown out at second base.
However, he did his job by driving in Black,
which was to be the winning run.
Dashwood came back with one run in an
attempt to even the score, but Goderich
maintained their composure to hang on and
win 4-3.
After an early morning rain shower, the
Goderich ladies hosted their doubles lawn
bowling tournament on July 18.
One game was played before everyone sat
down for a delicious lunch at noon served by
Vera Margerm and her group.
Despite ,uticatinui8 skid, tue unree
games were completed and the following
are the winners: Isobel Millen and partner
from Lucknow won first; second and third
went to two Goderich teams, Olive Gilbert
and Norma Hazlitt, and Florence
McFarlane and Kay Short.
A consolation prize was awarded to a
team from Exeter, skipped by Della Smith.

ple tournament on August 29. The draw for
the quilt will be Made at this time.
