On Thursday, children nine years of age and under can go rollerskating from 9 - 11:30 a.m. at the Goderich Arena. Those over nine -years -old can testtheir abilities from 1:30 - 4 p.m. Admission is 50 cents. Learn how to dance to the latest hits upstairs at the Arena. An hour and a half of dancing activities have been planned, starting at .10 a.m. These dancing lessons - ,can be put to use in the afternoon at the costume dance. Prizes will be awarded to the best dressed dancer and the best dancers. The dance will run from 1 - 3:30 p.m. and the cost is 25 cents. Canada's Wonderland and all its attractions are scheduled for Monday, July 30. Enjoy a day of 'rides, exhibitions and live entertainment in Toronto for $19 per person. This yrice includes an all day pass and the bus ride. It is suggested that each participant bring a bag lunch and money for supper. Interested people should pre -register at the Goderich Recreaction Office on MacDonald Street as t is operated on a first come, first serve basis. Last Saturday she ran in Ailsa Craig, setting a new record in the 14 -year-old and under category. Christine ran the race in the record time of 43.32 minutes. ' The previous race she ran was held in Frankenmuth, Michigan where she finished fifth in the 17 -year-old and under category. Her time of 44.07 was also good enough for a 429th overall finish among 1,955 runners. +++ The Kincardine Sportsfest registration deadline has been extended from July 20 to August 1. There are still plenty of activities for people of all ages and varying athletic ability to take part in. Get a group together and spend the weekend of August 17, 18 and 19 in Kincardine, playing slo-pitch, soccer, lawn bowling, swimming and many More sporting events. Entry forms are available at the Goderich Recreation Office on McDonald Street, or by phoning the office at 524-2125. Runners came from across Ontario to take Narejko) Hot day produces hot runners The excessive heat Saturday morning proved to be more of a challenge than a deterrent for the 106 runners wbi completed the Sixth Annual 10 km Run in Goderich. A total of 112 r i ners were registered, but three runners 'd not show while another three runners di cross the finish line. , Martin Dixon, of Brantford, won the Men's Open category, and the overall race, in 32.30 minutes. Jeff Swartman of St. Thomas was second and Jim Wendland of loo was third. Audrey McCabe, of Acton, finished first in the Women's Open with ,Cheryl Whipp pl • ing second. Paula Droog, of orndale, was third. John Smallwood was the winner of the Goderich Men's Resident category. Scott Macaulay was second and Al Hamilton was third. Winning the Goderich Female Resident category was Connie Macaulay with Val Mallough placing second. Judie Burns ' finished in third place. In the Youth category, Bill Ressard of Chatham finished first. Greg Ewinger, of Hamilton was second and Cambridge's John Cress was third. Three Ldndon men took the Master's category on Saturday. Gary Owens placed first, Bernie Conway was second and John Todd placed third. This year's Classic Run was sponsored by the Goderich Recreation Department, Athletes Foot, Nike, Adidas and New Balance. The top three finishers in each category . received merchandise that totaled $600. harness races Thursday The races held last Thursday at the Goderich Raceway were hindered by two unfortunate accidents. The first accident occurred during the third race when Benmiller Jae made a break, taking Carl Fisher's Dallas Kate, and H.O. Jerry's Banquet Boy down. The second accident Thursday evening occurred after the sixth race. Allan'Sadler went down while warming up Garmor Natalie. As a result of the accident, Al Sadler suffered a broken collar bone and shoulder blade: The ninth and feature race, of the evening was left wide open for a favorite due to the late scratch of Garmor Natalie. The resulting winner of the ninth was Bert McBride's Peter Wave, ,,,driven by Ross Battin. It was Battin's third. win on Thursday night as he guided Peter Wave to the finish in 207. Setons Choice was second and Charlie Brindley's mare Rustie Helene was third. Just to add an interesting note - both Peter Wave and Rustic Helene moved up in class and finished very well against a tough bunch of horses. - Ross Battin started his winning streak in the second race when he drove Merrywood 1.1ilo her third win in five -'starts at the Goderich Raceway. Merrywood Liz paced the mile in 2:05. Battin picked up his second win on a late catch drive as he won the eighth r -ace with Freddie Flanagan. Freddie Flanagan won its first lifetime start in 210.3. The winner of the tough race was no real surprise for those who have been keeping their eye on Koop DeGroot's mare, Noble Amy. Noble Amy won her fourth start in a row at Goderich in 2:09.3 on Thursday. Noble Amy is in to race again this Thursday evening as the competition keeps getting'' tougher and she keeps showing how tough she can be. There . will be 10 harness races this Thursday. The ninth race of the evening is the Molson's Pace. It features five very good pacers. Willvan Duke, which is trained and driven by Jack Radcliffe, will be tough out of post position one. Fred Sadler is on Country Topper, who has the two hole. Verdun Vanstone is driving local horse Linlor Lebelle who scores from post position three. Highland Bridgade, driven, by Robert Taylor has post position four and Jerry J. Direct driven by Fred Maguire will be tough out of the five hole. The Molson's Pace promises to be an exciting race as all five pacers have been racing in around 2:03 and 2:04. Other horses to watch on July 26 are Linton Rodger in the first race and Garmor Natalie in the eighth. The races begin at 7:45 p.m. - don't miss the excitement. Paul Steep and Connie Macaulay, both of S1opitc tourney a success This year's ladies' slo-pitch tournament not only had great weather, but there was some great ball being played on the diamonds at Agricultural Park. Unfortunately, the four Goderich teams did not do as well as some of th it visiting teams did. witThe weekend of fun -filled slo-pitch ended h the Little Red Devils taking the "A" division championship while Dublin took the "B" division. The Little Red Devils defeated Petrolia 9-4 in semi-final action and Ithe Seaforth Wildcats downed the BayfieldShawdows 9- 2 to make it to the "A" division finals. The "A" final was scoreless until the second inning when Seaforth scored one run. The Devils battled back in the third inning to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead. Each team scored one run in the sixth inning, but Seaforth managed to tie the game at three all in the top of the seventh. However, when it was the Devils' turn to bat they made no mistakes, scoring the winning run by edging past Seaforth, 4-3. Sandra Finlayson of Seaforth was named MVP. In "B" division semi-final action, Formosa defeated Goderich's North End Marina 51 a*d Dublin dOWied lti t :it_ advance to the finals. Vromosa Starteel& -off on the right -foam they received a home run. But Dublin countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Dublin continued to hit, scoring two runs in the fourth' and eventually took the "B" title, 4-1. Dublin's Cheryl Kriope was named MVP. Goderich, took full advantage of the fountain outside Town Hail by splashing the cool water over their bodies. Steep finished 56th overall in 45.29 minutes and Macaulay was the first female Goderich resident to complete the race. One run was scored in St. Marys half of the third, making the score stand at 5-3. Hebei tried to nullify St. Marys run in the top of the fourth when he took four balls for a waik and attempted to get to third base. However, he was thrown out. Harrison and Langridge were the other two outs. Goderich scored one run in the fifth inning, leaving two players stranded on base. Colquhoun started the inning off with a double and eventually reached home. Lane struck out and Jefferson hit a single, only to be thrown out at third base later. Mike Duckworth and Pellow each hit singles, but Greg Alcock grounded out to end the batting. Marys a 9-8 victory on July 15. Goderich's Devon Colquhoun put forth a good effort for his team, scoring three runs. It was three up and three down in the first inning for Goderich, - as Colquhoun and Derek Jefferson grounded out. Brian Lane made three out as he took three strikes. St. Marys fared much better during their hall of the inning, turning two walks into scoring runs. Down by two, the Goderich team pulled up their socks and scored five runs. Mike Duckworth was the first batter but he hit a fly ball to the shortstop for the first out. Bob Pellow changed the pace of the game with a double, followed by Greg Alcock's single. Jamie Hebei was up next, but struck out to make two out. Tim Harrison then hit a. single, scoring Pellow. Jeff Langridge followed, getting on base due to an error by St. Marys' second baseman. Colquhoun then got on base with a double as he drove home three runs. Brian Lane made his turn at bat count as he hit a triple and drove Colquhoun home. Lane was then stranded on third as Jefferson hit a fly ball to the third baseman for three out. St. Marys repeated Goderich's performance in the first inning as they had three batters up and three down. But St. Marys doubled the one run Goderich received in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 6-5. Goderich was unable to score a run in the fifth inning, but St. Marys continued to play steadily, tying the gakne at six all. With the pressure on, Goderich's Colquhoun and Jefferson scored one run. apiece, but teammates Pellow and Alcock were left on second and third. St. Marys then had the opportunity to bat. They turned two walks and a single into runs, sliding past Goderich, 9-8. LOCAL TEAMS The tournament opened with two Goderich teams on each diamond. TheGo- For-Ettes faced All Ages and North End Marina faced the Bedford Brats. The Go - For -Etter carne away with a 17-5 victory while the Brats defeated North End, 14-0. That same evening Goderich's S fto met the Seaforth Wildcats and were mercied 12-0 as Seaforth went on the victory road. Saturday saw Ron's Shell do away with Albatross 23-1. Ron's Shell later met Petrolia but could not repeat their performance. Petrolia took the game 12-1. Meneset was defeated by Rostock 31-0 and Mac's Milk lost 9-4 to the Little Red Devils. Heading up the tournament committee this year was Pat Costello and Pat Hutchinson. According to Costello, the entire tournament went off without any difficulties.
