shouldn't be flown daily
Dear Editor,
I ride a bicycle slo*ly and I notice "Ye
Gide Gaol" is flying the..Stars and Stripes,
the mag of our neighboring country.
This flag, flying on such a place, tells us
a11, visitors frm both Canada and the USA,
that this is indeed a tourist trap. When you
see this flag flying over an American com-
pany plant, you surely know that their pro-
fitsare hiking back to the USA.
What is the line of command in mounting
the American flag? Does the OK come from
Ottawa, Toronto? -
Our ancestors had a hard time with the
friendly folk from across the lakes.

Finding foreign flags flying daily on tax
supported or subsidized buildings shouldn't
be.
American -Canadians who want to fly or
carry the Stars and Stripes, please do so!
However, as a courtesy to the country you
are in, keep some Canadian flags too and
leave your guns at home.

Volunteers thanked for helping
Dear Editor,
On behalf of the Bicentennial Showcase
Committee, I wish to express our sincere
thanks for all the volunteer help we received
to make the Showcase a huge success.
Special thanks to Katimavik for their help
in setting up and taking down, parking and
security. Thank you to all the people who
provided donations, sold tickets, the St. John
Ambulance for their excellent service and to
Dave Sykes of the`Signal-Star. Thank you to
the Recreation and Arena staff who
continued to work non-stop throughout the
day and night.
Last, but not least, to all the people from
the Goderich Laketown Band, Goderich
Music Boosters Club, Goderich Little
Theatre and Goderich Arts Foundation. The
funds raised from the Showcase will be
divided amongst the four groups to be used
for each group's special projects.
Thank you to the citizens of Goderich and
area. The turn out was excellent;
approximately 1,600 in all. Thank you
Goderich for your fine support!
Sincerely yours,
Jane Netzke,

a night to remember.

Solidarity is the word of
today for area farm groups
Dear Editor,
Open letter to Murray Cardiff, MP, Dr.
Gary Gurbin, MP, Murray Elston, MPP and
Jack Riddell, MPP.
Upon your request I am reporting on
Huron County's first Farm Crisis Summit
Meeting held in Ashfield Township.
The meeting was undoubtedly a great
success for out of the six groups invited to
speak, all actively participated except the
Concerned Farm Women which had to
cancel at the last minute, although they
were supportive of the concept.
Upon welcoming about 50 farmers and
wives to the meeting, I gave a report from
all MPs and MPPs and expressed your
support for such a meeting and your reasons
for not being able to attend because of prior
engagements.
Not actively farming because of the deep
depression which has wiped out so many
young beef farmers today, yet coming up.
through the farm groups in the seventies, I
have been active in the National Farmers
Union, Ontario . Federation of Agriculture
and Canadian Farm• Survival Association,
all having a just cause.
I will now concentrate on bringing them
together on a single front to face the severity
of the major problem, united. Yes,
Solidarity is indeed the word today.
Brian Ireland of the Onta rio Federation of
Agriculture suggested all farm groups
forget their differences and work together.
Father Paul Mooney of Catholic Rural Life
spoke of social justice and of 'being a self
sufficient nation of which we are supportive.
Bill Jongejan of the Christian Farmers
Federation said there is a need for debt
reduction in some cases to young farmers.
Lloyd Willem of the National Farmers'
Union said as it stands now, the provinces
are fighting each other, which leaves Willert
believing farmers "are just toggreedy."
I believe you all know what Allen Wilford
had to say, "We must save the family farm
at all cost, by stopping farm foreclosures by
banks and F.C.C." Allen spoke on parity
pricing and said the creation of new wealth
by members of the farming community
would benefit all of society.
Hopefully this may lead to a major
Coalition Summit Meeting on a provincial
level.
Yours in Solidarity,
Cletus Dalton.

Ontario Maple syrup A
producers tour this area
About 170 members of the Ontario Maple
Syrup Producers Association, along with
some producers from Michigan, New York
State, Quebec and Nova Scotia, toured the
Bayfield, Goderich, Wingham and Blyth
areas for two days last week.
The Association hosts a summer tour
annually in different parts of the province.
Bill Robinson of St. Augustine, a provincial
director for the Association, says the, tours
are "mostly a social get-together" but also a
chance to visit other sugar camps and .get
new ideas.
Robinson says there is a lack of maple
syrup and maple syrup products on the
market right now because of a poor crop the
last -'cup'e of years. The poor crop can be
blamed on the weather conditions (this past
winter it was too cold and the previous
winter it was too warm to produce a good
crop explains Robinson j. Eighty per cent of
the North American maple syrup crop
comes from Quebec with the other 20 per
cent coming from Ontario, New Brunswick,
Nova Scotia and 13 of the United States, he
says.
The tour group visited Albert Shelby's
sugar bush at Bayfield, Robinson Maple
Products at St. Augustine, William Young's
sugar bush near Blyth and Heritage Maple
Products at R.R. 2 Blyth. They also visited
CKNX-TV and Bavarian Meat Packers in
Wingham and the farm of Phil Durand,
south of Bayfield. Durand is making alcohol
for use as fuel in vehicles.
On Thursday at noon, the group ate lunch
in -Harbour Park, Goderich and had a
banquet in. the Goderich Township Hall that
evening. They wound up their tour on Friday'
afternoon with a visit to the Huron County
Pioneer Museum in Goderich where they
were treated to tea and scones on the
museum grounds. ,
