LOOKING BACK
80 YEARS AGQ
Complaints are ,many about young men
and boys bathing at improper hours and
improper places daily, but especially on
Sundays. Citizens say they are not able to
get near their boat houses or wall along
some parts of the -docks or piers on
afternoons without meeting bathers
exceedingly scantily clad or not clad at all,
and this promiscuous bathing is becoming
so offensively prominent as to prevent our
residents of the prettier sex from enjoying
an afternoon promenade along the south
pier, the breakwater or the docks.
The Goderich Planing Mill Company Ltd.
will be in full possession of their new factory
on Monday and have closed down the old
mill. A large staff of men are engaged
moving material to the new location and
from today, all orders will be received at the
new mill, corner of Nelson Street and
Cambria Road.
The Big Mill Company is putting up a
large warehouse for the storage of salt. It is
being erected near the railroad track so that
cars can be easily loaded.
The young people at the Summer Hotel
organized a concert the other day and the
proceeds, $8.60, were handed over to the
Daughters of the Empire for the Alexandra
Hospital.

50 YEARS 'AGO
Rapid progress is being made in drilling
the new salt well at the plant of the Goderich
Salt Company.
Rumors flew thick and fast around the
harbor on Tuesday to the effect that'a large
craft .had been seen burning out on the lake
Monday night. On Tuesday night, about
11:35 p.m., the moon sank in a queer blaze
and the mystery of the burning ship was
solved.
The Humane Society has 'awarded a
certificate to Cornelius Stapleton of
Goderich, for his action, along with three
other boys, in saving the life of a fifth
youngster in Toronto.
Two days of evidence at the preliminary
hearing of Stephen Truscott, the 14 -year-old
Clinton boy accused in the slaying of Lynne
Harper, 12, has resulted in a decision by
MagistrattDudley Holmes to commit him
for trial afthe Huron assizes commencing
September 14.
Goderich is well on its way towards
another million -dollar year in new
construction. Permits for projects valued at
$508,475 were issued in the first six months
of this year.
Goderich Town Council passed a by-law
Monday permitting the ronstruction of a
mini -plaza on Bayfield n.,ad. The by-law
rezoned the parcel of lam adjacent to the
Suncoast Mall from Development to
Highway Commercial to permit the 6,000
square foot plaza proposed by Lamor
Enterprises.
The recently constructed grandstand at
the Agriculture Sports Complex; has been
renamed the Ronald Feagan Memorial
Centre, after the late Ronald Feagan, a
native of this area and one of harness
racing's great drivers.

will feature
Health Fair
People today are taking more interest in
their health than ever before. Smokers are
giving up the habit; coffee addicts are
limiting their caffeine intake; overweight
people are dieting; and the inactive are
jogging and getting into physical fitness.
However, still more has to be done to
emphasize that looking after one's health is
an on-going process and also ane which will
keep you out of the hospital and add years to
your life.
To this end, the Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital, the Huron County Health
Unit and the Huron Centre for Children and
Youth are sponsoring a Health Fair at
Goderich's Festival of Arts and Crafts this
weekend. +
A booth will be set up in Court House Park
offering displays, "hands-on" activities,
audio-visual demonstrations and hand-out
health related pamphlets, buttons, etc.
Health care professionals will also be on
hand to answer questions.
Some of the topics which the Health Fair
will cover are child development, nutrition,
smoking, stress management, dental
health, VD, substance abuse and posture
and body mechanics.
The Fair will also offer computer
assessments of individual lifestyles and a
chance for people to discover how it feels to
be in an automobile collision in an exercise
called 'The Seat Belt Convincer'. The
Rabies Van from the Ontario Ministry of
Health will be on hand with information too.
And'some elementary school students will
be giving 'Jump Rope For Heart' skipping
demonstrations on Friday afternoon and
evening and Saturday afternoon.
The Fair is sponsoring a coloring contest
for all children 10 years of age and younger.
This contest will offer prizes to the best
colorer in two age categories.
There will also be a free draw (the prizes
will be displayed at the Fair booth) and free
balloons for everyone.
In short, the Health Fair will be offering
something for everyone -Young and old. if
you are young, -what better time to start on
the road to a healthy lifestyle? And if yoil
are a senior citizen, it is not too late to
improve your health habits.
So, be sure to visit the Health Fair booth at
the Festiv*lthis weekend,
