participate' in the Fifth Annual
International Friendship Marathon. This
year's marathon goes from Owen Sound to
the Canadian Pavilion in New Orleans.
The 13 boys and one girl reached
Goderich on Monday at 3 p.m., carrying
their torch and flags. Mayor Eileen
Palmer greeted each of the athletes and
presented them with the Town of Goderich
flag as well as a crest and pin that they will
wear throughout the marathon. In return,
Mayor Palmer received.a miniature of the
Owen Sound flag and a pm. '
Coach Myles Caskie and Hank Horner
will be leading the group of athletes that
range in age from 12 to 15 -years -old. The
runners hail from Owen Sound, New York,
Texas, Ohio, Mount Forest, Hepworth and
California.
Their training started in August of last
year and included running through six foot
deep snow drifts, running on roads,
beaches, as well as country trails. They
also ran up and down hills and endured not
only the coldest of temperatures but the
hottest as well.
Over the 1,600 miles they will stop in 20
'cities. From Goderich they will head to
Sarnia, Port Huron in Michigan, Flint,
Lansing, Battle Creek, Indianapolis,
Decatur, Springfield, Hannibal, St. Louis,
Cape Girardeau, Paragouid, Memphis,
Grenada, Jackson, Natchez, Baton Rouge
and New Orleans.
Andrew Carruthers of Goderich has
participated in the Friendship Marathon
for three consecutive years, however, this
year he has decided to stay on the sidelines
and cheer the others on.
The 1984 International Friendship
Marathon should prove to be an
experience that none of the participants
will soon forget.
