This year's marathon goes from Owen Sound to the Canadian Pavilion in New Orleans. The 13 boys and one girl reached Goderich on Monday at 3 p.m., carrying their torch and flags. Mayor Eileen Palmer greeted each of the athletes and presented them with the Town of Goderich flag as well as a crest and pin that they will wear throughout the marathon. In return, Mayor Palmer received.a miniature of the Owen Sound flag and a pm. ' Coach Myles Caskie and Hank Horner will be leading the group of athletes that range in age from 12 to 15 -years -old. The runners hail from Owen Sound, New York, Texas, Ohio, Mount Forest, Hepworth and California. Their training started in August of last year and included running through six foot deep snow drifts, running on roads, beaches, as well as country trails. They also ran up and down hills and endured not only the coldest of temperatures but the hottest as well. Over the 1,600 miles they will stop in 20 'cities. From Goderich they will head to Sarnia, Port Huron in Michigan, Flint, Lansing, Battle Creek, Indianapolis, Decatur, Springfield, Hannibal, St. Louis, Cape Girardeau, Paragouid, Memphis, Grenada, Jackson, Natchez, Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Andrew Carruthers of Goderich has participated in the Friendship Marathon for three consecutive years, however, this year he has decided to stay on the sidelines and cheer the others on. The 1984 International Friendship Marathon should prove to be an experience that none of the participants will soon forget. • OW' opows ara.,thp:4•Teampasos'.ttit:040 ,AW.•*,A" • Lawn bowling club gets grant A group of retired people from Goderich will receive a New Horizons grant for $11,088, Health and Welfare Minister Moni- que Begin annqunced recently. The Goderich Recreation and Lawn Bowl- ing Club will purchase furniture and equip- ment for a new centre. Activities include carpet bowling, shuffleboard, dancing, sup- pers and social get-togethers. New Horizons is a federal government program that enables retired people to create projects of their own choosing. It of- fers grants to groups who undertake ac- tivities for the benefit of themselves and others in their community. The accent is oq local needs as seen by older people and on their willingness to meet such needs. Paul Kelly and John Lehay had three hits each to lead Kirkey's 11 hit attack. Doc Miller also had two hits for Kirkey's. Steve Haggitt, Steve Frayne and Bob Graham each had two hits for the Orioles. Terry Johnston fired a seven -hitter in picking up the victory for Kirkey's. Denomme's remained close to Kirkey's with a 3-1 victory over Ho,tel Bedford. Paul Corriveau pitched a three -hitter for Denomme's in picking up the victory. Jeff Denomy led Denomme's offensively with threehitsthey remained two points out of first The Goderich Industrial Fastball League held its all-star game on Tuesday, July 10 with the Dunlop Division defeating the Maitland Division 1-0. Players from. Canada Company, Sherwood Express, Payter's and the Orioles formed the victorious Dunlop Division team while players from Kirkey's Kar Kare, Denomme's, French Cleaners and Hotel Bedforduformed the Maitland Division squad. The only run in the game came in the second inning when Simon Langlois's single and Mike Frayne's double put runners at second and third. Langlois later scored in the inning on an error. Pitchers Simon Langlois, Doug Vock and Ron Willis of thd Dunlop Division, and Terry Johnston and Don Bogie Of the Maitland Division, combined -on four -hitters for both teams. Canada Company defeated French Cleaners 3-2 and the Orioles 9-4. 3:4 Canada Company scored an unearned run 5in the eighth inning to defeat French. Dave 2 Scholl added relief for Petrie in the final two irthings. Bob Kiehl led all hitters in the game 73 with two hits. Simon Langlois only gave up 5 just six hits, despite the loss. • Dave McDonald supplied late game heroics for Hayter's td lead them to a 3-2 co nine -inning victory over Hotel Bedford. With co ilayter's losing 2-1, McDonald singled home the tying run in the bottom of the seventh • • inning and then singled harm the vOinning —4 run in the bottom of the ninth inning to gain the victory. Dave Scholl picked up the win in relief of Phil Petrie, as they combined on a O six -hitter. John Crawford gave up seven hits • in the loss.
