Redick released the following statement to her campaign supporters on Friday evening, July 13: "Prime Minister John Turner has announced that a Canadian Federal election 'will be held on the fourth day of September this year. "I believe the Liberal Party will win this election. "I believe the values and the ideals of Liberalism are the only hope we have of 0 maintaining a strong, sensible country where care and attention are paid to the elderly, the sick, the poor, the small businessman, the farmer, and indeed to all who comprise this land. "I believe Huron Bruce must at last be represented in the government of this new parliament.' , "For all these reasons, after a great deal of personal soul searching, after consultation with Liberals across Canada, and after long discussions and enthusiastic support from my husband and my children, I have decided to announce my intention to seek the candidacy of the Liberal Party for Huron Bruce riding. ° OPINION GODERICH SIGNALSTAR, WEDNESDAY, JULY 18,1984—PAG);. 5 F nvention ex o penses not warranted Searls says It seems apparent our local P.U.C. com- and, answered all the questions concerning mission is like their counterpart Ontario the expansion of the water system. "They will collapse and fall: but we will rise and stand upright." However, the only "name" he mentions in his article is "Our Lord Jesus Christ." And then he says: "allow me to suggest that you become familiar with the Lord." "The LORD" of the Hebrew Scriptures telling of God's dealings with Gideon, David and Samson is the One whose "name alone is JEHOVAH, the most high over all the ..,earth "(Psalm 83:18 AV) : the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ" (John 20:17) "whom God hath raised from the dead " (Acts 3:15) Would it not be in keeping with truth and reason to identify by name the God with whom we should "become more familiar"? Roberts cites training as solution to unemployment BY STEPHANIE LEVESQUE Suggesting. training and retraining as a solution to unemployment, taking swipes at the Opposition and encouraging more political involvement from women were all accomplished in a pre-election swing in Perth by Employment and Immigration Minister John Roberts. The 50 -year-old cabinet minister from Toronto flew into London July 5 following the full Liberal cabinet meeting in Ottawa earlier that day. He arrived at the first of two engagements in Stratford shortly after 8 p.m. His first stop wa$ at the inaugural meeting of the Perth Women's Liberal Com- mission held at the Vitoria and Grey Trust building. Mr. Roberts told th women that this is a "transitional, irnportant and exciting time" for new people and young people in the Liberal Party. Although the election had not officially been called by Prime Minister John Turner, Mr. Roberts said voters would shift to the Liberals in the election that "will soon be upon us". He noted that Opposition leader Brian Mulroney had touted his platform on "jobs, jobs, jobs" a year ago, but Mr. Roberts said Mr. Mulroney had taken no action to date. The employment minister said the -6e are job -creation programs in place now and in the past year, Mr. Mulroney has never ques- tioned nor debated the government's employment programs. Accompanied by members of the press on the walkover, Mr. Roberts said he couldn't discuss what had taken place in the after- hoon cabinet meeting. However, he did com- ment on the forthcoming meeting of the Liberal's platform committee. The committee, said Mr. Roberts, will consider the major issues such as unemployment and the Canadian economy. -Commenting on some of the criticism that has been leveled at the prime minister, for holding the swearing in ceremony of the federal cabinet in private, Mr. Roberts said he didn't think the Canadian public was be- ing deprived of anything. A Liberal leadership contender himself, the employment minister said he would have no problem working in Mr. Turner's government. "I said at the beginning that I'd be glad to have any of them ( other candidates ) in my cabinet and I'd be glad to be in theirs," Mr. Roberts said. He said the first weekend in July was an emotional experience. Mr. Roberts said on Friday the Trudeau cabinet had a farewell dinner together and on Saturday he was back again at the same place with the new Turner cabinet. Mr. Roberts spent the rest of the evening in Stratford meeting local Liberals.
