Pat King, Chief of Police.. This week we deal with Town of Goderich By -Law 54 of 1984. The new Traffic By -Law passed by council on July 16, 1984 now prohibits parking on the following streets in the area of the Agricultural Park: Britannia -Road, south side–between Waterloo Street and South Street; Eldon Street, west side– between Britannia Road and Blake Street; and Blake Street, south side–between McDonald Street and South Street. This prohibition is in effect at ANYTIME. It applies equally to those persons who live on those streets. In other words, you may not park outside your house, if you live on• those sides of those streets. Although not new, you may not angle park your vehicle anywhere in town unless it is so designated by signs. If there are no signs displayed then you may only park parallel on any street. NOTE: a common place where this occurs is near ball -parks, especially on Gibbons Street. Other parking infractions which are not new include: You may not park on any GRASSED boulevard, or on any sidewalk, or within ONE metre of a driveway or laneway or so as to obstruct vehicles in the use of that driveway or laneway. You may also not park within six metres of an intersecting street, other than on The Square (where you can only park in the designated parking spaces). You also may not park a vehicle: within an intersection; on any street so as to obstruct traffic; within 15 metres of a railway or rail crossing; longer than 24 hours on; any street; in front of or within three metres of a fire hydrant or along any - side of a street where police "No Parking"signs are displyed. REMEMBER: for the ones listed above (other than the streets around Agricultural Park) NO signs have to be erected; but absence of a sign in those cases is no excuse. Next week we shall deal with other parking restrictions where signs DO have tb be displayed. Town should pursue tourist promotion The town of Goderich should make a genuine commitment to the pursuance of a tourist promotion campaign and that commitment may include the creation of a new staffed department. The second public meeting to discuss the future of tourism as it relates to the town of Goderich and surrounding area was held at MacKay Hall Wednesday and the consensus of the 30 people in attendance was the town should hire a co-ordinator and pursue .an active campaign of tourist promotion. The meeting was called by the organizational review committee of council, after those in attendance at the Fresh Daily From Our Own Gardens! CAULIFLOWER BROCCOLI ZUCCHINI SNOW PEAS CHERRIES NEW ONT. While the second attempt failed to produce more in, terms of numbers, those in attendance endorsed a motion calling for council to set up a vehicle, committee or board, with a co-ordinator to solicit members and funding to proceed with a scheme of, tourism promotion for the town of Goderich. The rnotior:s suggests the town would also contribute to the funding. While some of those in attendance argued that the taxpayers of the town ohould be fiscally responsible for a promotion department and that the County of Huron should take a more active role in that regard, most wanted the town to show leadership and take some form of positive action. Both committee chairman, Glen Carey and Mayor Eileen Palmer intimated that there would be some cost involved in setting tip a promotion department, but that it would not be that great when all promotional funds were extracted from individual committee budgets. "When you consolidate funds spent on promotion into one pool there will aim be enough. There will be some increase in spending but not much," Palmer suggested. Mike Lawley of the Ministry of -Tourism and Recreation told the meeting that tourism is a large industry that plays a major role in the economic development of a community, But first, he said, the town must generate aopositive'attitude and long- term commitment to the development of tourism as an industry. "Goderich is on the borderline of being a small community and the resources may be stretched and there is an attitude question," he said. "But first you have to make a commitment and you need an entity to provide direction, based on the needs of the community." Sandra Chabot of mthe• Southwestern Ontario Travel Association (SWOTA) said 1.5 million people crossed the Bluewater Bridge at Sarnia in 1983 and she said promotion was needed to keep those people coming up the highway. "You have to work to get people into your area," she said. Time is of the essence Rob Sherwood told the'meeting adding that the town had to decide if it wanted to be in the tourist business. "We are living in a competitive society and have to decide if we want to be an aggressive tourist community," he said. The matter boiled down to whether or not the businessmen were willing to make a financial commitment to promotion, Jim Searls said. "We've spent money on The Square putting in trees and sidewalks and it's high time to spend on promotion. We must channel our moneyeinto promoting the town to get people into town. Let the side streets go for three or four years," he said.. There was general agreement that those who served on the committee or board that will be created, should be businessmen or connected .with the service industry. It was also suggested that the business community and town people have to develop a new attitude towards tourists and the tourist industry in general, considering it is_ vital to the social and economic makeup of the town. The city of Stratford has a convention bureau which is funded by business people and the city council. It was suggested that the co-ordinator of that buruea be invited to speak here. Town accepts roof tender bids Goderich town council accepted tenders on two roofing projects and a sidewalk construction project at its regular meeting Monday. Coupcil accepted the bid of Exeter Roofing, the only one submitted, for work on the cemetery garage and mausoleum roof. The company quoted a price of $2,300 for the garage work and $3,976 for work on the mausoleum. The roofing contractor did not bid on the library roof which must be replaced but council gave the commissioner of works and the works committee, authorization to spend up to $7,000 on the project. The construction of a new sidewalk on Bennett Street from Tilt to Gibbons Streets will be completed by C.W.A. Contracting of London, which bid $11,880. Council solicited five bids on the project that ranged from the accepted tender to a high of $19,888. The sidewalk contstruction is part of council's commitment to enhance the safety factor at the intersection of Bayfield Road and Bennett Street. HEAT GETTING YOU DOWN? TRAVELLING COSTS TOO HIGH?
