The motion, intrpduced 'hy Jim Searls, was defeated by a 6-3 margin in a recorded vote at council's regular meeting Monday. In speaking to the motion, Searls said that councillors are now attending less meetings, that there are fewer committees and that there are fewer night meetings. "Larger communities than Goderich pay less," he said. "At election time every councillor talked about restraint but council does not practice what it preaches." Councillor Bill Clifford presented council with a schedule and summary of the remuneration paid to mayors, reeves, deputy -reeves and councillors of seven municipalities of a comparable size. "I requested a random survey and Goderich was 15 per cent lower than the average," he said. "In view of that, I cannot supput v q renuctton. " The summary included the remuneration schedules of the town of Strathroy, Ingersoll, Hanover, amherstburg, Dunnville, Bradford and Paris. The average pay for the mayor in those centres was $9,211 compared to the Goderich figure of $8,263. The average pay for reeves was $5,204 compared to $4,131 in Goderich while the average for deputy - reeves and councillors was $5,189 and $4,751 respectively. Town of Goderich councillors and the deputy -reeve earn $4,131 annually. John Doherty, seconder of the motion, said that perhaps pay should be geared to an attendance schedule. Searls told council his survey included the city of Woodstock and the town of Tillsonburg. Searls, Doherty and Bob Cornish voted in favor of the motion while Mayor Eileen Palmer, 'reeve Harry Worsell, deputy -reeve Jim Britnell and councillors Don Wheeler, Bill Clifford and Glen Carey voted against the motion.
