Jun Costello was again the dominant force winning the tournament for the fourth consecutive year. In the semi-finals Jirn Costello Prevailed over Brian Ratherby 6-0, 6-1. In the other semi-final John Jamula was the winner over Pat etonlon 6-4, 6-2. In the final, Jim Costello utilizing his powerful serve, was in complete. control vinnin6-1 6-1. p # The Goderich Memorial Arena, the Grandstand and the Goderich Recreation Office passed inspection by the Public Institiutions Inspection Panel last month. According to Goderich Recreation Director Jane Netzke, this year's inspection report was a great improvement over last year's. All three buildings were found to have goodgeneral appearances and to be very dean. The Goderich Recreation Board was told at their June meeting that all suggestions made by the Panel are being carried out. +++ An emergency meeting was called by the Goderich Recreation Board on June 28 to discuss vacuum system problems. After - much discusiiona_the, group present at the meeting decided to by a system valued at $1,500. •The present system's pipes, which are approximately 35 years old, are plugged beyond repair. Plans have been made to purchase a portable vacuum system which should be delivered in three weeks. +++ Adults wishing to rent the Goderich Arena ice surface next year will have to pay $47 per hour, up $2 from last year. The rate for minors has also gone up $2, making the price stand at $36. According to Goderich Recreation Director Jane Netake,, the extra two dollars is approximately a five per cent increase and is based on figures from October 1983 to April 1984. +++ Minor ball hockey at the Goderich Arena last Wednesday saw the Capitals run away with their game against the Oak Leafs, 13- 0. The Generals also played last week, defeating the Leafs 3-1. The minor ball hockey teams play Wednesday nights at 8 and 9 p.m. at the Goderich Arent/. Seven is lucky number for Rink Rats and Rebels Seven was the lucky number for the Rink Rats and the Rebels on June 26 in men's ball hockey. The Rink Rats defeated the Brewers 7-2 and the Rebels downed ExpresS 7-1. On Thursday, Express bounced back to defeat the Warriors 4-0. RINK RATS 7- BREWERS 2 The Rink Rats scored two goals within the opening three minutes of play against the Brewers. Dan Mailett and Rob Standen combined for the first goal while Rob MacDonald scored the second unassisted. • The Brewers' Smith came back to score one but'Mailett nullfied the goal when he scored his second of the night. Assisting on the Rink •Rat goal were Bruce Sheardown and MacDonald. - Rob Standen made. it 4-1 for the Rink Rats when he scored unassisted, but the final goal of the period was scored by Mailett, his third of the game. MacDonald picked up his second assist on the goal. Smith scored his second goal to start the scoring in the second period, but the rest of the scoring' was done by the Rink Rats. Paul Kelly took a pass from Greg Smith to score and Sheardown put the ball in the net after getting the puck from Kelly. The game ended 7-2 for the Rink Rats. REBELS 7- EXPRESS 1 The Rebels took a quirk three goal lead against Express and hung on to win 7-1 at the Goderich Arena. Jim Mathers opened the scoring with three and a half minutes gone in the game. Assisting on the play was Perry Boak. (photos by Darrell Kloeze) Sifto shows no mercy inslo-pitch There was plenty of ladies? slo-pitch action last week and one of the closest games was between Mac's Milk and the Go-For-Ettes. The game ended in a 9-9 tie. Each team scored three runs in the first inning. Jo Ann Wraith, Wanda Hodges and Kathy Dougherty crossed the plate for Mae's with Dougherty hitting a home run. Sue McKay, Pat Costello and Pat Allen scored runs for the Go-For-Ettes. To keep the game exciting, both teams scored two runs in the second inning. Kim Langlois and Janet Godfrey scored for Mac's and Barb Ottewell and Jeanette Pearson crossed the plate for the Go -For- . Ettes. It was Mac's who pulled out in front in the third inning by scoring one run and holding their opponents to no runs. Michelle Park was the lady who crossed the plate to give her team a 6-5 lead. A one rim lead was not gond enough for Mac's Milk as they added three more in, the fourth inning while holding off their opponents. Wraith, Hodges and Dougherty each scored their second run of the game. With Mac's Milleahead 9-5, the Go-For- Ettes defence ,grew stronger, as did their offence. In the sixth inning, McKay and Costello brought their team to within two Ills, and then in the seventh, Wendy D. and Lois Chapman ran home to tie the game. Diane Leddy was left on third base and Lana Fagan on second, both representing winning runs. SIFTO 16 - MENESET 1 Meneset was mercied by Sifto Salt 16-1 last Wednesday at St. Mary's diamond. Sifto went throught their batting order , during the first inning, with Carolyn Carter, Dorrie Chisholm, Marg McCauley, Bess Kelly, Gail Jones, Sue Volland; Beckie Mclvor, Darlene Ellison and Bonnie Durnin scoring one run apiece. Iknfortunately,mMeneset could,only counter V6ith one run, scored by Heather Stark. The rest of the game was Sifto's. Jones scored her second run of the game in the second inning, while Carol Moore picked up her first run. Volland scored the third run of the inqng, 'and the twelfth run for Sifto, to end the second inning. In the third inning, Sue Paquette and Chisholm crossed home plate to make thel score stand at'14-1. The final damage was done in the fifth inning when Carter and Paquette scored one run each for a 16-1 mercy. RON'S SHELL 8 - NILE 5 The game between Ron's Shell and the Nile last Thursday was filled with excitement as Shelllide past Nile 6-5. Shell started to get their offence in gear during the third inning, scoring three runs. Marilyn McCuspey, Ruth Oke and Sharon- Sowerby crossed home plate for a 3-1 lead. However, Nile countered with four runs in the third, but as it turned out, these would be their final runs for the evening. Annabel Stewart, Ann Drennan, Debbie Drennan, and Allison Graham scored for Nile. Shell spread their runs out over the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. , Donna Leppington and McCuspey scored in the fifth while Kirn Ward and Oke scored in the sixth. McCuspey scored the final run in the seventh inning totive Shell an 8-5 victory. BEDFORD 10 - ALL AGES 5 Bedford doubled All Ages 10-5 last 'Thursday when the two teams met on the St. Mary's diamond. The game was scoreless during the first inning, but Bedford scored four runs in the second and left a player on third. Diane Little, Betty O'Neil, Joanne Crawford and Diane Maize scored for Bedford while Donna,Maize was left on third base. All Ages held Bedford scoreless in the third inning while they scored three of their own. Sue McAdam, Judy Parks and Celia Drennen crossed home plate while Vicki Powell was stranded on third. With the score 4-3 in favour of Bedford, neither team scored during the ' fourth inning: However, the fifth inning was another story as Bedford scored six runs and All Ages two runs. Dame and Donna Maize each scored one run as did Val Willis, Carmen Savoie, Debbie Prouse and Shelley Barlow. Scoring for All Ages were McAdam and Karen Kohlman with Judy Parks was left on third, Celia Drennert, on second and Vicki Powell on first. There was no further scoring as the game ended 10-5 in favour of Bedford. SIFTO 28 - NORTH END MARINA 1 Sifto scored a total of 28 runs in a five inning mercy game against North End Marina last week. Sifto scored six runs in the first inning, five the second, two the third, six the fourth and nine in the fifth inning. The lone Marina run was scored in the third inning. Scoring for Sifto were Dorrie Chisholm, Marg McCauley and Kathy McDonald with four each; Sue Paquette and Jackie Harrison with three each; Carolyn Carter, Bessie Kelly, Darlene Elliston and Sue Volland' with two each; and Gayle Jones and Bonnie nurnin with one each. The only run for Marina was scored by Carrie. goal and then scored one of his own. Assisting on Smith's goal was Martel and - Greg Marshall. Denis Kerr scored the lone Express goal at the 9:47 mark of the first period with Trevor Erb and Terry Bean assisting, The Rebels managed one more goal before the period was over. Smith, scoring, his second of the game, scored unassisted to make the score 4-1. Brad Armstrong scored the fifth Rebel goal and Boak scored two in a row to end the game with a 7-1 victory. Assisting on Armstong's goal was Mike Wedlock. Larry McGee and Mathers assisted on Book's first goal and Jim Horton assisted on the second goal. EXPRESS 4 - WARRIORS 0 1 Express split their coals during- their game against the Warriors, scoring two in the first period and two in the second period; Bill Gallow was the star of the evening, scoring three goals and earning one assist. John Thompson was equally as brilliant, scoring one goal and earning three assists. Thompson opened the scoring near the 10 minute mark when he took a pass from Gallow and Gary Abbott. Two minutes later, Gallow scored his first of the game with Thompson picking up the assist. With only 16 seconds -gone on the clock in the second period, Gallow scored with Thompson and Daryl Madge assisting. The final goal of the game was scored by Gallow with only 41 seconds left to play. Thompson earned the lone assist. ee Wees win at home against Exeter 15-10 Twenty-five runs were scored in the Legion Pee;Wee-baseball game on June 25 in Goderich. The home team came away with the majority of runs, defeating Exeter 15-10. Goderich went through their batting order in the first inning, scoring six runs. Brian Lane, James Habel, Devon Coluquhoun, Derek Jefferson, Bob Pellow and Tim Harrison each crossed the plate for a run. Exeter was not as fortunate as they left a man on first and second in the top of the first inning. The top of the second inning Was better for the visiting team as they scored five runsto make the score 6-5. The home -team was not quite as productive in thbir half of the inning, but did manage to bring Jefferson home after he hit a double. Mike Duckworth and Tim Harrison found themselves stranded at the end of the inning. Exeter picked up one run in the third, narrowing Goderich's lead to one with the score standing at 7-6. However, \ Goderich's bats were swinging, driving in two runs. Coluquhoun took four balls for a walk and stole second on his way home. Jefferson hit a single and also stole second base before he crossed the plate to make the score 9-6. Good defensive plays held Exeter off the scoreboard while Goderich added five to their side. Brad Hill was walked, stole second and eventually made it home for one run while Lane, Hebei and Coluquhoun also took the four balls for a walk and made it home. Jefferson hit a single and made it home on a wild pitch. With the score 14-6 in favor of the home team, Exeter pooled their batting talents and drove in three runs. The Exeter defence did a fine job holding Goderich to one run when it was their turn to take to the field. Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but Exeter gave it one last try in the seventh to score one run. Goderich left the ball park with a 15-10 victory. Pee Wee B's put forth good effort ir15 -12 loss The Goderich Pee Wee B's played an exhibition game against the Clinton Tykes last week in Goderich. The Clinton team won, 15-12. Clinton started their half of the inning with one run and held Goderich scoreless in the bottom half of the inning. To Goderich's disappointment, Andy McLarty hit a fly ball to first base, Mike Hunter struck out, Aaron Duckworth was left on second and Jason Duckworth struck out. Clinton added one more run to the scoreboard in the second inning, however, this time they allowed Goderich to score one run. The run was scored by Brad Allen, who stole second and third and eventually made it home to tie the game. Goderich managed to keep Clinton off the scoreboard in the third inning, but they too were not allowed to score, a run. However, Clinton made up for not scoring any runs by having four players cross the plate in the fourth inning. Aaron and Jason Duckworth were the two players who scored for Goderich in the fourth as their team tried to match the runs Clinton scored, but fell short. Aaron hit a single and stole second on his way home, while Jason hit a double, stole third and then made it home. With the score 6-3 in Clinton'sfavour, the Goderich defence did their best to keep their opponents from. scoring any more runs. However, Clinton had other plans as they drove one run in during the fifth inning. When it was Goderich's turn at bat, they countered with three runs to make the score stand at 7-6. Mike Hunter watched the ball carefully, taking four balls for a walk and Aaron Duckworth hit a triple. But it was Scott Creamer who started the inning off with a walk and then he stole second base. All three of these players crossed the plate. Clinton scored two runs in the sixth 'inning in an attempt to nullify the Goderich runs, but Goderich added another in their half when Brad Bell made it home. The seventh inning saw a total of 11 runs scored. Six by Clinton and five by Goderich. McLarty hit a single to get on base and was followed by Hunter's walk. Jason Duckworth hit a double, Mac Irwin reached base'on and error -by Clinton's second baseman, and Jason Clark was also walked. Each of these players made it home in an attempt to even the score. But their efforts fell short as Clinton went home with a 15-12 victory.
