" � meetin-1 t for, July 11 , GOPERlCH SIGNAL -STAR, WEDNESDAY, JULY 4,1984 PAGE A second meeting to examine the direction of tourism and the town's prmotionai and organizational resporlsiblities, will be held at MacKay Hall , Wednesday July 11 at 7,30 p.m. While the organizational review committee of council carved out some recommendations from an initial meeting attended by about 25 interested citizens, there was some agreement that a second meeting was required to investigate the vital topic. Officials had hoped to attract more business people to the meeting citing the. fact that they have a direct lifeline to the tourist �rade. There was also diseuSalon on the consolidation of the -existing business - organizations in town to present a more united front in the promotion of the tourist trade. • As t result of the public input at the first meeting, committee chairman Glen Carey recommended that the town actively pursue • the proinotion of Goderich a tourist attraction and that a person, either full or part-time, be hired to pursue the industrial. and tourist promotional interests of the town. It was also suggested at that meeting that the business community be urged to take a more active interest. Seniors en O.�Vlac�a, � y variety concert at Ha11T were interesting about the country and the people where he had lived in their homes and wa§ able to communicate with them. A questio period followed in which he answered many questions that the audience were interested in about the people and the country. Kay Hodgkinson read a humorous letter from a mother in Newfoundland to her son, and""`alao a section "Grandma is off her. Rocker". Ed Stiles played the piano and Bill Chase conductedsome sing -along numbers. Jean Schram read a poem entitled "Old Home Week". President Russel Alton announced some coming events. The next MacKay Messenger will be printed the end of August. There will be no Card of Life clinic during July and August. He called on Janet Kalbtleisch; president of MacKay Choristers, Who presented the treasurer Herb Bridle with two cheques: one for $100 for 'the choir winning second place in the competition at Kitchener and a $75 cheque for their part in the Sounds of Goderich. She gave great praise to Irla Stewart, leader of the choir: The recipients of scholastic achievement awards presented at the closing assembly of Robertson Memorial Public School included; Julie Bender, _Grade 6 achievement award; Jeff Langridge, Grade 7 achievement award and Lori Jane Lamb, Grade 7 math and student council award. ( photo by Dave Sykes) A very interesting variety concert was held in MacKay Centre June 27. Barba!'a McWhinnie and Kay Hodgkinson were in charge of the program. The concert opened by singing 0 Canada with Ed Stiles it the piano. Barbara read a humorous monologue "Paper bag Cookery'"! telling how the news print comes off onto your food. Bill' Chase sang several solos accompanied by Ed Stiles. One of the selections had only been sung once,before, it was written by Ed and called "If you Wonder". Guest speaker for the evening was Shirley Keller and in her usual manner Shirley gave the audience food for thought. She said seniors play a very important part, in the community because they have a wealth of information and experience. She also suggested several ways the seniors could be helping younger people. But she warned the seniors they should not be too demanding of others and be known ` as miserable ' old people. Dr. Rourke who had been in Africa with Rotary International showed slides of that country. Dr. Rourke was a very enthusiastic speaker about this trip and his comments. TRY THESE GREAT... Guest speaker will be Mr. Fred Prescod from the Royal Botanical Gardens;' Hamilton. ' The guest speaker was'Mr. Ron Stewart, a graduate of Niagara Horticulture School and at present working at Smith's Garden Centre. After graduating in 1977 he has furthered his studies- in greenhouse management and also worked for Niagara Parks Commission. He gave useful information on planting and storing bulbs, planting window boxes, pots and tubs, and their care,..as well as points on planting and caring for roses. New Goderich Garden Club signs have been placed in flowerbeds where the club plant and care for the flowers or have provided the money to pay for the plants. -Themes .. one _beside_. the ginkgo tree planted laat year in Harbour Park. The Goderich Garden Club held their June meeting at Robertson School, with a good attendance of membgrrs and visitors. The Flower Festival will be held in the Council Chambers again this year. Dates are July 19, 20 and 21, and the theme is "Tribute to Trees". In September, the meeting will be held in the Auditorium of Robertson School. At this time we have invited the Horticulture Societies from the surrounding area to be our guests. Mr. Doug Mier, ,site manager of Hullett Wildlife- Authority will be the guest speaker.
