Goderich Legion Branch 109 President
John A. MacDonald and several other
members of the I3ranch recently attended
the bi-annual Do#ninion convention of the
Royal Canadian Legion which' was held -in
Winnipeg from June 17 to the 21st.
This convention saw Comrade Steve
Dunsdon of Pacific Command elected as the
new Dominion President of the Legion for
the 1984-1986 term.
The Legion delegates at this convention
voted to increase the per capita tax by $2.00.

it was also decided that the Legion will

As of this date associate Members (sons
and daughters and spouses of veterans) are
now eligible to receive all honors and
awards presently available to ordinary
-(veteran) members of the Legion:
The Legion Book Depot, which makes
reading material available to those
members of the Canadian Armed Forces
serving outside Canada and at remote sta-
tions in the Canadian far north put oout a call
at the convention for more suPe by all
Legion Tranches in the collection of pocket

As the Royal Canadian Legion was found-
ed at the Unity Conference in November of
1925 and the Dominion charter granted Tri
July of 1926 the Legion from coast, to coast
will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee next year
commencing on May 8th,1985 (VE Day) and
continuing through the year 1986. Included
in 'the plans for the 60th anniversary of the
Legion, as reported at the convention, are
a tulip campaign (blood red tulips for sale to

the members);. a special recognition of the
war veteran, whether Legion or not; an
aural history of theveterans and the Legion
to be placed in the Public Archivesfor the
use of future historical researchers; a new
extends hands across Lake Huron in Canada Day parade

The Alexandra Marine and General
Hospital Board will request two-thirds
funding from the Ontario Ministry of Health
for upgrading the. hospital's electrical
supply. -
Plans and specifications for the project
have been received from Vanderwesten and
Rutherford . who estimate it will cost
$197,000. The proposal is to expand the -size
of the existing electieal room by adding a
small addition. The new equipment would
include a 1600 amp. 347-600 volt distribution
panel which would be hi addition to the
existing 1200 amp. 120-208 volt panel. �..
Will restore bricks
The hospital board will consider the
restoration of the brick work on the south
side of the 1967 wing as a project in the 1985-
-86 budget. A quotation of $9,916 for the work
has been received from. New Look
Restoration Limited but tenders have not
been called for yet.

Two remote lights will be installed over
each operating room table at the hospital at
a total cost of $288.62. This will correct the
present situation of a seven second delay
from the time regular ,power cuts out until
stand-by power reactivates the lights.
Also a quote from Stand -Ry Power for $888
has been accepted by the board for
replacement back-up batteries for the fire
alarm system. .
Plan hospital.booth
Plans are well underway for a hospital
booth at the Festival of Arts on The Square
from July 19-21. The theme of the
presentation at the booth will be -on wellness
and lifestyles and will be, called "Health
Fair '84". Other agencies, such as Public
Health and the Huron Centre for Children
and Youth, will participate along with the
hospital.

committees for 1984-85 have been named as

Presentations were made recently to
retiring hospital board members, Isabel
Sully and Jack Brady, in appreciation for
their work on the board during their terms.
Name is changed
The name of the Palliati:1e Care Service at
the hospital has been changed to Supportive
and Palliative Care Service. The word
'supportive' was added so as not to restrict
some people coming onto the service who
may only need short term support at the
tin7grof their diagnosis or following surgery.
Occupancy rate high
In her report to the hospital board
recently, Director of Nursing Joyce Shack
said that normal staffing in the nursing
department is gauged to manage an 85 -per
cent occupancy rate and that in April and
May, 48 out of the 61 days had a higher than
85 per cent{ or 79 patients) rate.
The board again discussed the shortage of
-accommodation for chronic care patients in
the community and the need•for more home
care programs. However, no action- was
taken on this matter.
Will collect pledges
The hospital board,. has decided to re-
activate the tominittee to follow up on
outstanding pledges for the=Intensive Care
Unit.
