Bayfieid Bounders challenge e CFPL to. a'cr cket match
a/
BAYFIELD - The Bayfield Bounders will
be challenging CFPL's Team 1Q to a cricket
match on July 1. Both teams will donnig
white uniforms and swinging flat cricket
bats all in fun, to celebrate Ontario's
Bicentennial.
According to Bayfield Bicentennial
organizer, . Helen Owen, both teams have
been hard at work practising the unfamiliar
'sport to achieve the game's object which is
to score runs when at bat and to put out or
dismiss the opposing 'batsmen when in the
field.
The game is played with a bat and ball on
a large field known as a ground, between
two -teams of 11 players.
Each side has two innings, normally taken
alternately. The matches are played for a
predetermined length of time and often two
days or more are required to finish (a team
at bat may accumulate as many as 300 to 400
runs before the opposing team can retire all,
players). International or test matches
between national teams of selected players
last at least five days or a minimum of 30
hours.
Cricket ranks as the national sport of
England, Australia, New Zealand, South
Africa :and the West Indies and is a
prominent sport in India, Pakistan and
Ceylon,
The oorlgin of cricket is unknown .but
experts say it probably derived from the old
English word, "cryce", meaning stick, and
in fts rude form, It is said to resemble a 13th
century game known as club -ball.
It evolved in England during the 18th
century, mainly because of the 'interest of
great land owners' who tried their skills on
the field of play with their tenants and local
peasantry.
The first international or test match,
between players chosen for their abililty to
play well, was in Melbourne in 1877. A team
made up of Australia's finest players beat
the team of England's best in 45 runs.
Australia's success was repeated in 1882
and London's Sporting Times reported an
obituary announcing that cricket would be
cremated and ashes would be sent to
Australia. This gave birth to the legend of
"playing for the ashes" which became the
popular objective in games between
England arid Australia.
Goderich Bridge Club scores
Cathy McDonald directed a 10 table
Mitchell game at the Goderich Duplicate
Bridge Club on June 19. The average was 108
points:
Mary Phillips and Frank Laverty won the
North-South division with 139.5 points. In
second place were Helen Tench and John
Wood with 127.5. 'Louise Hetherington and
Cathy McDonald finished third with 121.5
and fourth place went to Theresa Donatis
and Arlene Gibbons with 115.5 points.
East-West division was won by Mary
Donnelly and Eleanor Erskine with 128
points. Joanne Duckworth and Lee Ryan
were second with 125.5 and Sandy Turvill
and Randy Piirainen placed third with 119.
Evie McDonagh and Edna Overholt took
fourth place with 114 points.
Today, the ashes are kept in an urn , t
Loa'd's in England: They are the remnants of
a stump that was burnejI on an English tour
of Australia in li 13.
Margaret Chapman, Bayfield PottOry
Club member, has been chosen to makehe
tournament cup for the Bayfield match. The
cup will be fired in a kiln and eventually,
' `token" ashes will be placed inside and the
trophy will be awarded to the champions.
London's CFPL-TV or Team 10 decided to
accept the Bayfield Bounders cricket team's
challenge because, "the offer was so out of
the ordinary." said Glen Fuller, Team 10
promotional director.
Mr. Fuller said he is trying to get as many
"on air" personalities as possible. Though
no one has fully committed themselves yet,
people like Eric Sorenson, Jay Campbell,
and Pete Kearns have tentatively signed up
for the event.
"We are also hoping to get some of the
girls to sign up," added Mr. Fuller.
Next week, Team 10 will swing their bats,
borrowed from Western. University, for the
first time. They will be holding their first
practiq' nntsiriv the telvvrisinin ,tntinn nnri
Glen Fuller joked that there will be a lot of
people standing around ' with "dumb
expressions on their faces."
CFPL will be advertising the event on the
Community Calender segment of the
station's broadcast and Mr. Fuller said he
was sure some of the personalities who will
be playing, will mention the match on the
air.
One Team 10 cricket member is also a
member of the famed Morris Dancers. He
has decided to offer the dancers' services
for a special intermission 'program and
HelOwen is trying to convince the
Victo Order of Nurses, who will be there
for any ergencies, to dress in Edwardian
nurses' uniforms. To date, they are still
trying to find the costumes.
Team 10 participate fn various events
throughout the year, which include baseball
games and hockey tournaments. Mr. Fuller
said the challenges are met on a voluntary
basis and the station actually has a budget
set aside to account for the matches.
"The most important thing to remember
is that the match is a fun thing," said Mr.
Fuller.
