STUDY
BY THE REVEREND HARRY VRIEND,
TRINITY CHRISTIAN
REFORMED CHURCH
During the hot summer season, there will
be plenty of forest fires in Ontario. With a
few weeks of hot weather and with some
acts of carelessness, the result is more fires'
and indescribable damage. The damages
are there in the blackened forests, the
clisrupted wild -life patterns, and sometimes,
in the lives that are lost. No wonder the
Forest Service is insistent in its warnings to
"Be Careful".
The Word of God warns us about fires that
burn out of control in our hearts. The
preacher in Proverbs 6 (vs. 27) asks, "Can a
man carry fire in his heart, and not burn his
clothes?" There are a variety of fires that
would fit that question of the preacher.
There is the fire of anger •— which can
smoulder for a long time, and then suddenly
burst into flame with terrible consequences.
When rage burns, more than feelings are
hurt. Relationships are damaged,
sometimes even broken apart forever.
There is the fire of greed. In our material-
ly conscious society, we all think we have to
have many things. When ordinary interest
gives way to greed, then again there is a
trail of misery. Bills can't be paid, court
proceedings are called into session, and
legions of people feel their trust has been
abused.
Then there is the fire of lust. When this
fire burns, the ordinary interest in the op-
posite sex is heated up until there is a fire
that jumps many good fences. Again rela-
tionships are , broken; often families are
split apart, and' a thousand miseries come
into being.
How can we take precautions against
these fires? For one thing, you have to know
the territory. You have to know yourself and
which sin is likely to start a damaging fire in
your life.
You also need to take adequate precau-
tions. You need to keep your distance from
the temptations of the world; especially
those temptations that have a strong attrac-
tion to you.
The best protection of all, is to practice
the Christian life. If you have trouble with
greed, then contentment is your calling; if
you have trouble with anger, then kindness;
if lust, then sacrificial love and so on. With
God's help, we can avoid the pitfalls, and
stand in the victory that Jesus Christ has ob-
tained for us.
Society announces plans

of New York has revealed completion of
plans for a series of 22 district conventions

separate sites will be utilized for the annual
meetings. More than 110,000 persons are ex-
pected to attend the conventions in Canada.
Many delegates from this area will be at-
tending various conventions in Canada. One
of the 20 cities selected is London where the
Western Fairgrounds will host delegates Ju -

The theme for the 1984 conventions is
"Kingdom Increase" and much of the pro-
gram content will center on the growth of
the religious movement in recent years.
"Jehovah's Witnesses are marking a
centennial this year," one delegate said.
"The movement started one hundred years
ago with a handful of Bible students and to-
day is conducting ministerial and preaching
activity in 205 lands with 2,600,000 now
associated worldwide."
He said a projected attendance of 5,000
persons is expected at the Western
Fairgrounds.

Bishop Sherlock attends special banquet
St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church holds
the distinction of being the first church
erected in the town of Goderich in the year
1834 at its present North Street site.
And it was the construction of that frame
church and the events leading up to the
erection of the present magnificent and
imposing . structure that were fondly
recalled at a special banquet Sunday in
honor of the parish's 150th anniversary.
Several church, municipal, civic and
political dignitaries attended the
anniversary banquet at Saltford Valley Hall
Sunday. The banquet marked one of the last
official functions of the anniversary
celebrations that began in January with the
'New Year's Levee and lead „up to the
dedication of a memorial plaque on the
Feast of the Chair of St. Peter in February.
It also marked one of the last official
functions of parish priest Father Francis
Loebach who was named pastor in 1977. He
will be replaced by Father Joseph Hardy in
a month's time.
Following Grace and an opening prayer,
MP Murray Cardiff presented a
congratulatory scroll from Prime Minister
Pierre Trudeau and a commemorative
plaque from the House of Commons. MPP
Jack ,K.iddell also presented a
congratulatory scroll from Ontario Premier
William Davis.
Municipal government was represented
by Goderich Mayor : Eileen Palmer and
Huron County Warden Tom Cunningham.
The Reverend Robert Crocker , rector of St.
George's Anglican Church, spoke on behalf
of the Goderich Ministerial Association.
The Honourable Judge Francis G. Carter,
chairman of the 150th anniversary,
introduced the banquet's guest speaker, The
Most Reverend John Michael Sherlock,
Bishop of London, who commented on the
strength and growth of the Catholic faith in
Goderich from those humble beginnings in
1834.
Student minister speaks to KnoxWMS
Knox Women's Missionary Society met in
the church on Tuesday, June 17 at 12:30,
commencing with a delicious pot luck lunch.
An interesting skit called the "Tater
Meeting" was put on by seven ladies depic-
ting the different.characteristics of people.
The president, Mrs. R. McAllister, opened
the meeting with a poem entitled, "My
World" and the hymn, "Unto the Hills",
followed .by the Lord's Prayer, said in'
unison.
A minute's silence was observed in
memory of the late Miss Lily McArthur,
retired deaconess. The Reverend G.L.
Royal gave a very touching prayer in
memory of her dedicated life. As a
memorial, the W.M.S. decided to give a
donation to the Ewart -College bursary.
As Knox W. starts its second 100
years in September, it was decided as a pro-
ject, following the 100th celebration in
September, to give each new baptismal a
Presbyterian spoon.
The minutes were read by Mrs. C. Ed-
ward, and Mrs. White gave the treasurer's
report. Mrs. G. MacEwan took the offering
and Mrs. G. Young, took the Fellowship of
the Least Coin.
Dr. Kathryn Baker favoured with two in-
strumentals, "Moonlight Sonata" and "The
Little Negro". Mrs.. R. McCallum led in
prayer.
Mrs. Royal introduced the speaker,
Fraser Stinson, Knox's student minister. He
topleaThis topic, "The Call to the Ministry",
and in a ‘ery interesting manner told of his
experienc s and of the questions that con-
fronted in his choice of career.
Follow' g the hymn-, "What a Friend We
Have in sue„,, . Royal gave the
benediction.
