Christina
Court may
be paved
in 1985
The residents of Christina Court may
have their street paved in 1985 when the
town pursues a major reconstruction
project on Bennett Street.
A delegation of residents from the court
appeared before the works of committee of
council Monday, asking that the town give
consideration to paving the street.
The town has been tarring and chipping
the road, a process the residents said was
unacceptable this year, and delegation
spokesman Vernon Burton said the money
used in that process could be put to better
use.
The committee recommended that
reconstruction work for the street be
considered in the 1985 budget and
completed when Bennett Street work is in
progress. The town will not tar and chip
the road this year but will take
intermeidate steps to ensure the roads up
to.standard.
Committee chairman Jim Britnell told
the delegation that the town has over 40
miles of street to maintain and the cost of
that maintenance was "staggering."
"We are able to do about $350,000 worth
of work a year and it's not enough," he
said. "We have to hold the tax line and the
ministry will not match any money spent
on road reconstruction in excess of
$350,000. There are 20 to 30 miles of road in
town in similar condition."
Commissioner of works Ken Hunter said
that Bennett Street is one of the worst
sections of road in town and suggested that
water problems in the area of Christina
Court were related to the lack of storm
sewers.
"When the sewers are in place on
Bennett Street your street (Christina
Court) will be dry," he -said. "When the
street was constructed the proper storm
sewers were not installed."
While the town will not take immediate
action on the street; Hunter said the first 75
feet of the roadway is in poor shape.
Burton added that there was a noticable
hole in the road near Bennett Street that
required immediate attention.
The town works department will
undertake any remedial work required
this year and the project will be reviewed
in the 1985 budget.
