People need to react to protect museum says reader
OPINION
Dear Editor,
Your article on June 13th headlined "No
Interest in Museum Study" shocked me. I
found many of the statements and facts
given to your,_ paper misleading to the
public. ,
Before I go airy farther, I should inform
your readers that the county has hired a
Toronto firm to carry out a feasibility study
of our Huron County Pioneer Museum. This
has beennecessitated by the closing of the
museum's second floor because of struc-
tural problems.
This feasibility study will suggest answers
to many questions such as: (A) What
facilities does our museum need? (B) Can it
be accommodated on the present site? (C) If
not, where will we build? - and the one that
concerns me the most - (D) Should the
LETTERS
Huron County Museum exist at all?
Hopefully this last question will not even
have to be considered. The comments in the
aforementioned article by the chairman of
the county's Property Committee' stating
that he questions Huron's need for a
museum concerns me that the future of our
Museum may be in jeopardy.
I was also upset by the, data given to the
paper that only five responses have been
received from the feasibility survey. That
piece of information was inaccurate and
therefore misleading. The museum, as of
June 13, 1984 had at least 30 surveys filled in
and returned. To date it has received over
100.
I hate to think that the county politicians
and the public will make the wrongful
assumption that there is very little interest
in our museum. I feel that the poor response
is not an indication of apathy but is a reflec-
tion on the poor quality of the survey. How
many readers saw the survey in the Focus
paper or realized the significance of the
response?
There is a group of volunteers who have
been working very hard over the last year to
help the museum through a difficult period.
We had no trouble finding people to join us
and are getting new members every month.
Right now there are 35 of us doing many in-
teresting jobs to help promote our museum.
We have been visiting other museums and
gathering all sorts of wonderful ideas for
programs and displays to be carried out this
year. Given. better facilities, the
possibilities for our program will be endless.
Our unique collection of Artifacts has been
envied by many other county museum per-
sonnel visiting us. It must be remembered
that we could ease this valuable asset to our
community if the apathy of business people,
industrialists, boards of education and the
general public is misinterpreted and leads
to a closing..
There is going to be a public meeting on
July 5 at 8 p.m. in Holmesville. We need a
good turnout. You must react to protect
your heritage and interests.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Dempsey.
Awards don't recognize scholastic achievement
Dear Editor,
After reading the June 20 issue of the
Goderich Signal -Star, I was disappointed to
say the least.
As a former student of GDCI, I was
naturally interested to see the pictures of
the award recipients. However, after'`look-
ing at these pictures, I was not surprised to
find that all pictures regarding the awards
assembly were of those who achieved in
sports and drama. There was no recognition
whatsoever for those who achieved honours.
Of course, while attending GDCI, I did
realize that unless you were in sports, you
really weren't considered to be a member of
GDCI. Now, however, I feel it is time I said
something.
Sure, I didn't get involved in sports — it's
not that I didn't want to, it is just that I
didn't agree with the school's attitude. If I
had to be on a school team to be considered
popular — forget it.
We regularly had recognition assemblies
to recognize those who had achieved.
Achieved in what, you ask? Sports, of
course.
At this year's awards assembly, I receiv-
ed an award for achieving honours standing
in my courses for the four years I attended
GDCI. This award was very nice, but it
would mean more if I had received it in front
of my peers. You see, I had to wait until the
year after I graduated to get the honour pla-
que I earned.
As I sat there reading the paper, I felt sad-
dened for those others who also received
honour plaques and had no recognition for
their achievement.
To those unfortunate ones. I have one
thing to say: Congratulations — you deserve
it.
Yours truly,
Doreta M. Jackson.
Editor's Note: Due to lack of space, all of
the award pictures did not appear in last
week's paper. There are more of the
academic award pictures in this week's edi-
tion, as you will notice. We also produce a
special commencement edition featuring
academic award winners' pictures each
September.
If government is responsible, there will be censorship
Dear Editor: In reply to "Elsa's Column
Puts Issues in Perspective."
Please note contents, Mr. Henry. In my
previous letter, I did not at any time express
concern for your virility. 'The manner in
which you wrote conveyed to me this
possibility.
It is a matter of record that individuals
who practise sexual deviation have also
been convicted of drug charges.
In your most recent letter, you accused
Chris Westlake of not reading your letter
right. Surely before you accuse others, you
should practise the same thing yourself.
You say the bottom line for pornography
is supply and demand. So are most commer-
cial enterprises. You stated you are not
justifying pornography. Why all the
ballyhoo?
Groceries, liquor and drugs are under
legal jurisdiction. When anything goes
amiss that puts the public in danger, such as
DoiSrineci LrrlreriPS noisnnPd linnnr nr
drugs that do not conform to the prescrip-
tion of the Drug Act, they have the privilege
of suing, if any ill effects are suffered.
You might describe our legal system as
big brothers and nannies. They are there for
our benefit whether we like it or not.
On the subject of pornography, many in-
dividuals abhor censorship. If the govern-
ment is going to be held responsible, there is
going to be censorship as sure as little green
apples grow on trees, if there is a majority
of people who want it.
All one has to do is to write a letter to the
member of parliament indicating his or her
desires. It would be advisable to indicate
hard core or pornography in general. I
believe that the hard core is most impor-
tant.
We have enough kinky individuals in
Canada now without manufacturing them.
Sincerely,
N.J. Minaker.
Pillar plaques must be viewed from the highway
Dear Editor:
While out jogging the other day, getting
myself in condition and reading the street
names in the sidewalk, my course took me
by the town pillars at Huron Rd. and Britan-
nia. Something seemed slightly unusual.
There were two brass plaques, one on
either pillar, however, they were on the in-
side of these pillars. That seemed rather odd
since the sidewalks were on the outside. Try
as I might, I couldn't discover a path
anywhere by them and came to the conclu-
sion that in order to read them one would
have to stand on the highway. The one pla-
que was titled - Pioneers of the Huron. Tract
1828-1928.
They commemorate the life work of the
men who opened the road, felled the forest,

built the farmsteads, tilled the fields,
reaped the harvest; and of the women who
made the homes, bore the children, reared
them, worked hard in the porn fields and en-
nobled domestic life in the Huron Tract for
100 years.
These brave men and women had to en-
dure savage critters, hostile redskins and
diseases of all sorts without aids to help
them I had to tolerate ferocious man-eating
Goderich earwigs, a plew of Japanese sub-
compact cars and a berserk town street
sweeper. That really brushed me off. I just
couldn't take any more and retreated back
to more familiar turf. One of these days I
shall try and read the other pillar; but my
nerves are shot and it just isn't worth the
risk at the moment.
