LONDON, Zi67, 17.-77ze Giornale iItozue publishes a despatch irora WIliab says tbat news has been received there that Cracow. the capital of Galicia, is burning and that its inhabitants are fleeing. Cracow Is invested on the oorth, aud is Dented to fa/I bouriallately. Prom reports Of ReSsiall fieeeting detachments which had ridden within a few miles of Cractrw it appears the Germans have taken command of the forts and defences there, and have substituted German aoldier for Aus- trians in garriscosing tbe stronghold. This step has caused frviber tits- sentions betweeu the Germans and Austrians, the latter' being relegated tcr the defence of the Carpathians, and not allowed any voice in dii ecting the camoalgo. Ail indications point to o rupture between tbe two armies. Petrograd further reports that tbe Russian campaign is developing fav- orable in East Prussia. On the Polish frontier and in Gal- icia two enormous armies are Mass- ing for a battle which may deeide the fortunes of the war he the east. The possibility is being discussed that the Austrians may abandon Cra- cow without defence 'rather than sub- mit the city to a destructive bombard - merit. The Russian advance In East Prtts- sia, according to dvices receiped at Petrograd from the front, is' being assisted materially by cold weather, wbich enables the troops to move more rapidly. In the swampy region of East Prussia movements of the army have been retardedby sett roads. Tbis condition bas ,now been remedied by the cold weather, which has frozen the roads.ea A fall of snow during the last two days is reported over the entire field of operations, but not to a sufficient extent to prove 'a serious obstacle to the raavernent of troops. Fresh troops now being sent to the front are supplied with short coats of tanned sheepskin. Relief societies In Petrograd and other Russian cities are bending every effort to collect WOollert garments. Despatches to Petrograd papers in- dicate that the Germans are making slow progress along the line which extends from the River Warthe across the Vistula, to the southern frontier of East Prussia. fifty miles east of Thorn. The new front extends over a distance of three hundred miles from the Wa,rthe to tbe extreme northeastern section of East Prussia. The Clerman right wing now ap- nears to 'he feeling its way. MONTREAL, Nov. 16. -At the Mon- tleal Stock Yard, West End Market, the feature of today's trade was the ac- tive demand from packers for canning stock, which was attributed to the fact that some of them during the past few day ,s had made some large sales of can- ned beef for export account, consequently a brisk trade was done in this class of stock, but as the offerings were smaller than they have been of late the feeling in the market for auch was stronger and prices showed an advance of 25c per cwt. with sales of bulls at 55.50 to $5,75, and cows at $3.75 to 54.25 per cwt. There was no important change in the condition of the market for butchers' cattle, notwithstanding the fact that the supply was small. and good to choice steers scarce. The demand was only fair and principally for small lots to fill actual wants owing to the unsettled wea- ther prevailingsales of a few good to choice steers were made at $7 to 57.75, but ttie bulk of the trading was done in fair steal at 56 to $5.75 per 100, pounds. Small meats continue firm land the rade in Ontario lambs was aCtive at 7.59, to 57./5, while Quebec Stock sold t 57 to 57.25 per 100 pounds.
