A similar comparison:
showed 17, 696 driyers
and passers- ees were
injured against 19,236 in
1979.
There were -45.,149
accidents recorded over
January, February and
March of 1980 against
50,420 in the similar
period of 1979.
"That's encouraging,
but the fatality rate
isn't," said -Snow.
"With the stepped-up
enforcement and mild
winter we had, I was
hopeful there would have
been a sizeable decline in
this area.
What's happening out
there on our highways?
We don't have all the
answers, I'm afraid. We
4::.
do' know drinking drivers
are involved in something'
like almost half the fatal
crashes; we also know
driver inattention is the
reason for almost 90
percent of all accidents,"
he'said.
"When I say driver
inattention, I'm talking
about a multitude of sins -
- simple driver preoc-
cupation or talking or
arguing when behind the
wheel of a vehicle in
'heavy traffic, aggressive
driving, -tail-gating.
without regard for the
consequences, unthinking
lane--chan-ging;'tpeeding
"Whatever it is, it's a
terrible waste of human
resources. And ' the
misery, in terms of the
social implications,when
breadwinners are kilned
or ° seriously injured is
something no one can
measure in cold
statistics."
In total, including 52
pedestrians, two
motorcycle drivers and
three cyclists and
another eight in non-
motor vehicle
snowmobile, tractor or -
construction equipment
mishaps, 283 people were
killed over the initial
three months of 1980
against 285 in 1979.
Property damage.
accidents declined 12.4
percent, dropping from
35,945 to 31,888. ' '
Band
review
BY CATH WOODEN
If you feel like going out
`pubbing' with your
friends, "hut you wish
there was something to
do other than sitting and
drinking and beer and
looking at each other,
then the place to go is
*here Deacon Yorke and
the Fire and Brimstone
Band is playing.
The Deacon and his
band were at the Duke of
Bedford's Court Lounge
last week and everyone
who went to see them had
a great time. The band
specializes . in audience
participation numbers
and shamed everybody
into singing along,
clapping, and banging
their glasses on the tables
excusing_ those mho___..____.._._._ _
,w ere "tragically hip"
from joining along..
They did the oldies but
goodies like, "Knock
Three Times," "King of
the Road," "Won't you
come Home Bill Bailey,"
"Dream D,ream Dream,"
and even "This Land is
Your Land".
fi The band also sang
their soon -to -be -recorded
song Tell Me What's
Wrong With the Neutron
Bomb. If you didn't see
Deacon Yorke and the
Fire and Brimstone Band
while they were here, and
you get a chance to see
them somewhere else,
don't miss their act.
If you've already seen
them and want to go
again, you can expect the
same songs and even the
same lines in between
them.
YOU BET YOUR, LIFE
IT CAN. PLEASE GIVE:
