There's One Near You!! i r Back A 75 YEARS AGo An excursion party from Stratford and all along the line, reached Goderich at 10 a.m. yesterday. The excursion numbered between 700 and 800, and came well prepared for a regular picnic, as they had several wagon loads of well filled baskets. The day was very fine, and the excursionists had a pleasant time. There was considerable paddling and bathing, and boating and ,fishing were well in evidence, and the bowling and tennis lawns were not - forgotten. The town Public Works staff wou-14 earn --the appreciation .-of many ladies if the burdocks which line the steps to the harbor were cut. They are a positive nuisance, especially at the Widder bank steps. Wheeling seems to be a little metre favoured this season as a means of pleasure and locomotion, judged by the number seen on out streets these .days. 25 YEARS AGO Police rushed down to the Harbor about 2 a.m. Sunday to see waht the noise was all about. It turned out to be a group of enthusiastic water skiers skimmjng over the moonlit waters of the Harbor unaware that their joyous 'shouts were heard for a considerable distance. Town council adopted its police committee report last Friday night appointing Andrew Straughan, of Goderich, as temporary constable for the summer months. He started his duties last Saturday and will be on the force until September 6. The beach at Goderich harbor had a fairly good crowd on Tuesday, the first day of, sufh'tfiet'Ylpi 1 the weatherman 'co- operated to make it a good day for swimming. Temperatures were 66 degrees in the water at the beach, 68 degrees at the beach and 72 in the shade. 5 YEARS AGO The thunderstorm that struck the, Goderich area recently caused about $3,000 damage to hydro equipment in town and toppled trees and limbs throughout the area. The storm, one of the most severe to strike Goderich in the last decade, lasted about an hour and dumped about a half an inch of rain through the night. Calculations were made this week at Goderich District Collegiate Institute to determine the top students in Years 1 through 5. The winners receive awards worth from about $50 to $200 each. The students were: Michael Palmer, Year 5, Flora Simpson, Year 4, Joan Coulter, Year 3, Anne Marie Howard, Year 2, Don Coughlin and Audrey Vanden Heuvel, Year 1, Grandma graduates BRUSSELS - Barb Watts of Brussels just graduated from Grade 12. That wouldn't be unusual if she were just any other high school student, but Barb is 43. She and her husband Max have six children and one gran- dchild and she had to work around normal household duties and helping Max at the Watts Funeral Home. One of Barb's main objectives for getting her Grade 12 was to qualify for a course in Funeral Services at Humber .College in Toronto so she could offer even more assistance in the un- dertaking business. Barb only had Grade 10 education but didn't go further in school because like many others of her day, the oldest child went out to work to help sup- port the family.
