MITCHELL - Uncer-
tainty over the fate of the
Fryfogal Inn restoration -
project ended last
Tuesday as Perth County
council, ited Lo cancel its
plans to restore and
expand' the , historic
building on Highway 8
east of Shakespeare.
The decision ended two
months of speculation
and , sometimes bitter
infighting.
The inn is jointly owned
by the city of Stratford
and Perth ,,County. The
restoration ,project and
administratidi of the inn
as a tourist attraction
were to be handled by the
Perth County Historical
Board, a body funded
jointly" by the tw.p
municipalities.
However , Stratford
withdrew from the
Fryfogel project after the
county decided to opt out
of another board ad-
ministerd project, the
rehabilitation of the
Minnie Thompson
museum in Stratford.
George Wicke, reeve of
Ellice Township, con-
ceded that there were no
really no feasible
alternatives for county
council to choose from,
since they were without
city support and getting
grant money from
Wintario was
questionable.
Even if the ;money was
still available, the county
would have had to pay the
city's portion of the
project,, $65,000 plus a
settlement for the city's
shared ownership in the
inn,' possibly as high as
$35,000.
The county would
probably also have had to
ospital in good finances
BY DAVE SYKES
The financial statement presented by the
chartered accountant firm of Durst, Vodden
and Bender at the Hospital Board annual
meeting Monday was comparitively good.
The audit of the finances to March 31, 1980
revealed that the net expenditure for the year
was $4,144 less than the budget approved by the
Ministry of Health.- There was an operating
deficit of $42,312 that consists of $71,598 in in-
terest and depreciation on buildings and.
equipment that the Ministry does not recognize
over the hospital's Share of charges for priva:e
and semi -private accomodation, chronic car, -
and abulance services of $29,286.
The total expenditure for the year was $4.3
million, representing a five per cent increase
over the previous year. Seventy -bye per cent of
the operating expenditure , went for staff
salaries and benefits.
Claims to the Ministry of Health for Ontario
Hospital Insurance Plan insured services made ,
up 95 per cent of the total expenditures.
The per diem rate for in. -patient ward care
went from $124 from $121 which was a result of
restricting cost increases to five p-er cent. Total
patient days exceeded the budget by 12 per cent
and were up by eight per cent over theprevious
year. •
During the year the new linen storage facility
was completed at a cost of $154,000 and other
capital fund expenditures included; building
and service equipment alterations at a cost of
$13,647 ; costs of $11',213 for the proposed
psychiatric unit and $26,230 for equipment
purchases. Of that $205,090 total the Ministry of
'Health suppli-ed $100,694 arid municipal funding
amounted to $55,887.
