HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1980-06-25, Page 5Goderich and district obituaries WILLIAM JOHN, ENSIGN William John Ensign of 117 Wolfe Street, Goderich died Monday, June 23 in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital at the age of 81. He was born in.Bruce County, Ontario on February 6, 1899 to Eli and Sarah Ann (Potcher) Ensign. Hea was --married to Elsie Dextrer in Lucknow on August 2, 1922. They farmed near Lucknow until coming to Goderich in 1933 where Mr. Ensign worked as a guard at Sky Harbour Airport. ' The couple next moved to Thorold in .)942 where Mr. Epsi gri wormed at -the - paper mill. lie then went to work at the steel mill in St. Catharines until retiring back to Goderich in 1965. During World War I, he served overseas in England as a Sapper No. 2010232 with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He enlisted in London, Ontario on May 28, 1918 and was discharged in London on April 19, 1919. He was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109, Goderich. Ile was also a member of Victoria Street United Church, Goderich. He is survived by- his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Ed (Eileen) Leroux of Ori111a; one sister, Mrs. Frank (Mary) Fellows of Sarnia; three grand- children; and five great- grandchildren. He was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Herb (Alice May) Ensign of Lucknow. A funeral service was held at Stiles Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. The Reverend John D.M. Wood officiated. Interment was in the -Maitland Cemetery, Pallbearers were Edward Linner, Harry Westlake, Russell Alton, Gerry Fellows, Fred Fellows and William Robinson. Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 held a service at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, June 24 at 9 p.m. STANLEY GEQRGE DRENNAN Stanley George Drennan, Huron Terrace, Kincardine, died in Kincardine General Hospital on Wednesday, June 18, 1980 in '" his 78th year. He was born in Ash- field Township on August 11, 1902, a son of the late Robert Drennan and the late Anne MacIvor.. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Bruce 341. He married the former Kathryn MacDonald of De- troit on April 19, 1940. He is survived by his children, Jane, Mrs. Donald MacKin- non of Paris, Ontario; Ann, Mrs. James Halsey of Ster- ling Heights, Michigan; Mary (Pat), Mrs. Don Mur- ray of Detroit, Michigan; Margie, Mrs. Finlay' Mac- Donald, Lucknow and Jim Coburn -of Roseville;- Michi- gan. He is also survived by his brother, Gordon Drennan of R. 3 Goderich, and a sister, Pearl Evans of Lacombe, Alberta. He was predeceased by his wife, sister, Bernice Patter- son, Mary Harton and Mae MacGregor and a brother, Elwood Drennan. A memorial service was held at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home in Huronview news Senior Citizens week started off very fittingly with Rev. Wittick holding the church service in the auditorium. The Father's Day service featured the Junior Choir from Blyth singing the. story of Noah interspersed with readings from Rev. Wittick. The piano was played by Mrs. Kai, and the choir was led by Mrs. Wittick. During the service Mrs. Henderson and Cecil Skinner sang a duet accompanied by Frank Bissett at the piano. Monday, we enjoyed the company of Wingham Happy Gang and Happy Citizens from Seaforth. Greeting . these senior citizens at the door'were Les Fortune, George Turnbull, and Mrs. Jean Scott. Our own residents at Huronview entertained our visitors -with--the program planned by Mrs. Elsie Henderson, which led off with Cecil Skinner and Elsie playing a violin and piano duet. Mrs. MabelAJeffrey played the piano and the men's chorus consisting of Mark Sproat, Jim Ruddock, Frank Bissett, Skinner, and Frank Crich sang a catchy tune. Frank Bissett gave a musical reading called "Kathy Did'1,, followed by a piano duet by Frank and Elsie. Miss Margaret McQueen sang a solo, and Elsie played her bells and made her doll dance accompanied by Franls,at the piano. Although Nelson Lear was suf- fering from a cold, he still sang Stern Old Bachelor. The men's chorus sang - again followed by Frank and Elsie playing- thn piano and organ in duet. Earl and Martha Haywood provided the entertainment. Greeting the visitors at the door were Mrs, Grace Peck, and Mrs. Muriel Gibson, along with Mrs. Verna Elliott and Frank Bissett. Margaret Jackson along with Institute members greeted the senior citizens from Blyth, Swinging Seniors, Zurich, Golden Agers, Clinton, Christian Reform. The en- tertainment was provided by Doris McKinley and her Ukuleles. In the evening, Lyla Storey's tap dancers delighted a . full auditorium. Wednesday was a very busy day with CNIB picnic inthe afternoon, also. Mrs. Minnie Fowler, Jim Ruddock and Mrs. Evelyn Archer ac- companied Cantelon and his mother Mrs. Edna Cantelon to the picnic. Our two ladies won prizes for being the two oldest at the picnic. Mr. Ruddock won several prizes in- cluding the prize for mastering the feat of whistling after eating soda biscuits. Thursday brought The Bayfield Ever Young Club, and Golden Radar Club from Clinton as our guests. Progressive Euchre Nvas played in the auditorium and winning prizes were: men's high, Ed Godkin, ladies' high, Iva Boyce who also had most lone hands for the ladies; man's low, Norman Shepherd, and ladies low, Edna Can- telon. Lone hand for the men was won by Marg Thorndike, and Pearl Cummings had the lucky chair. Greeting the two clubs at the door were Mrs. Edna Cantelon, Mrs. Mabel Garrow, and. Mrs. Mary Ross. The Senior Friendship Club from Brussels, The Companions from Dash- wood and Exeter Senior Citizens Club spent Friday with us. Meeting them at the door was Mrs. Mary Turvey, Miss Lottie Zurk, and Bill McCurdy. Entertaining for the afternoon was Marie Flynn with Old Tyme Music. Last week's column thanked the women's institute for the Bingo prizes, which was in error as the bingo prizes are furnished by the senior citizens in Huron County. Huronview will miss the following residents: Mrs. • Lenora Corrie, Stewart Fleming Ballagh, ' Mrs. Mary Fremlin, and William Fairbairn. WHO CAN DO IT? WE CAN! Hugh Nugent of Knox Presbyterian Church, Ripley, conducted the service. Flower bearers were David MacDonald, Bill Coburn, Walter Murry and George MacDonald. Pallbearers were Kenny MacDonald, John K. Agnew, Stuart MacLennan, Doug Drennan, Don Drennan, and Finlay MacDonald. Burial followed in Lochalsh Cemetery. MRS'. MARY M. CHISHOLM . Mrs. -Mary M. Chisholm of Guelph, formerly of Goderich, died in St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph on Tuesday, June 17 at the age of 86, She was born in Goderich Township on February 23, 1894 to John and • Catherine (Shanahan.) Lacey. She married Leo D. Chisholm. He predeceased her on November 21,19.69. She was a member of St. _ Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Goderich. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Joyce. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Robert (Gloria) = Buckley of Toronto, Mrs. E.R. (Mary) Reinhart of Kitchener, Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Kaufman of Guelph, Mrs. John (Rita) Spence of Winnipeg, and Mrs. Don G. (Agnes) Smith of Welland; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Prayers were said at McCallum Funeral Home on Wednesday evening, June 18. Interment was in St. Peter's Cemetery, Colborne Township. Pallbearers were grandsons, Roger Buckley, David Reinhart, Raul Reinhart, Douglas Smith, Glenn Carey and Don Smith Jr. MRS. DOROTHY LOVE Mrs. Dorothy Love of Ridgewood Park, R.R. 5 Goderich, died in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, Goderich on Wednesday, June 18 following a six month illness at the age of 45. She was born in Palmerston, Ontario on June 22, 1934 to John and Evelyn (Caplin.g) Elliott. She was married to Robert A. Love in Owen Sound on August 1, 1958. She is survived by her husband; three children, Bob, John and Mary, all at home; her mother; five sisters, Mrs. Jack (Isabel) Jones of Van- couver, Bea Sutherland of Mount Forest, Erland Smith of Owen Sound, Mrs. Jack (Doris) Boyle of Ottawa and Jean Booth of Goderich; and two brothers, George Elliott of Belleville and Jack Elliott of Owen Sound. A funeral service was held at McCallum Funeral Home on -Friday, June 20 at 2 p.m. The Reverend G.L. Royal officiated.
