Through the Rotary Youth Exchange Program, she will live and go to school` for a year in .Manila, the capital city of the Philipines. She is not too worried about the language barrier because she says English is spoken in the school she will be at-. tending along with Spanish,. Thealog and Philippino. Her host family is named Reyes. Laura specifically chose the Philippines because she wanted to go to a Third World country where the life style is completely different from ours. She felt this would• • be the only op- portunity she would ever get to visit such a country. The tropical weather also' appeals to her, she says. It reads as follows.: ' "Nineteen years ago it would have been difficult, if not impossible, to find an automobile owner with sufficient faith in his car to bet that it would travel 125 • miles without breaking down and without any outside Civic Corner The Goderich.Planning Board will .meet on Thursday, June 26 at 1 p.m. in town hall. "Yet in 192:5 James Black of Godirich ac- cepted a bet that he would drive his car from Goderich to the plant now making the particular brand of car he favors. And Mr. Black's car was exactly as it was 19 years ago. He took no longer to make the trip than the average tourist and when they told.him it was time he was getting a new car he pointed out that there was little use, 'con- sidering the old car was still going strong.' "Then he drove the ancient car back home again --and collected his $100 bet. "It is interesting to note_ in connection with the above illustration (it looks like a Model T) that the Ford Motor Company of Canada Limited, celebrates its 21st bir- thday on August 17. From total shipments in 1904 of 117 to the grand total of 541,251. shipments in 1924 indicates the gigantic growth of this stupendous Canadian industry." The James •Black mentioned in the article was the assistant post- master here at one time and Mrs. Chapman in- forms us that he was "quite a character". I wonder what he would think about today's car company financial troubles and the price of gas?
