Jesus said, ' A certain
man was preparing a
great banquet and invited
Many guests. At the time
of the banquet he sent his
servant to tell those who
had been invited, 'Come,
for everything is now
ready.' But they all alike
began to make excuses."
(Luke 14: 16-18)
"You must be kid-
ding!" may well have
been the reacti • n when
Jesus told this parable of
the great supper. The
excuses that the invited
guests gave were just
unbelievable. The first
man claimed that he had
to inspect a plot of land he
had just purchased. But
everyone who buys land
will inspect it before he
purchases it. He will want
to know the location of
.water, the soil quality,
the boundaries. A careful
person just doesn't buy
sight unseen. This man's
excuse was unbelievable.
The second man said he
had just bought a five
yoke of oxen and wanted
to try them out. This is
just as ric};ictilous aS the
first excuse, A farmer
would no sooner buy a
pair of oxen withput
testing them than you or I
would mail a cheque to a
car dealer without test-
driving the used car he
proposed to sell us. To
claim that he had pur-
chased five pair of oxen
without even checking.
their size and strength,
nor finding out if they
were well-trained, and to
use that as an excuse to
turn down a gracious
invitation to dinner, was
a deliberate slap in the
face of the host who had
invited him. An
outrageous excuse!
The third man was
even more polite. He
didn't even ask to be
excused. He simply said
that he had married a
wife and therefore
couldn't come. Again the
excuse was a poor one. In
those days, it would have
been most unlikely for a
man to celebrate a
wedding and not to invite
someone who had already
invited him to a dinner. In
other words, this excuse,
and each of the others,
was an insult to the host!
Unbelievable !
