With four Petrels, two
lasers and one Abbott 22
sailboat, the Huron
Sailing School, under the.
direction of -Paul Par-
sons, will continue its
training program for the
.third consecutive year.
The :program, to
commence July 14, will
feature day classes, held
four mornings a week for
one wed: and evening
classes, running two
nights. per . week for two
Weeks. Anyone can join,
Other individually or in
groups, by registering at -
the recreation office
throughout the summer.
Paul Parsons is the
instruction co-ordinator.
His • job includes
registration, public
relations, catering to the
needs of . the instructors
and he is the go-between
for. the . Town, the
recreation board and the
Goderich Sailing Club as
well.
The head instructress
is ponelda Roberts and
her co-workers are
Christina McKillop and
Evelyn Roberts. They
will provide students with
ample .on -shore training
as well as many hours in
the water. Although the
in -water instruction is by
far the greater part of the
course, the theoretical

aspects of sailing, such as
knots, and rules of the
road, cannot be
overlooked.
Persons enrolling in the
Level 1• course can expect
to acquire a basic sailing
ability, including
familiarization with the
boat, knots, safety, rights
of way and the rigging
and . derigging of a
sailboat.,
In the Level 2 course, a
higher competency of
instruction is pursued.
Students • learn how to
spot thunderstorms and
sandbars and will also
become familiar with
helm smanship,
crewmanship and the
many • commands that
accompany each of those
positions. Capsizing the
boat is a drill that is
stressed simply because
it,can happen anywhere,
anytime and in any wind.
• Level 3 candidates are
qualified to sail the
lasers. And they will
lean tosail in winds up to
15 knots. More sailing
knots and hitches will be
emphasized in this course.
and the scope of ter-
' minology is widened.
Parsons, who is a
Goderich resident, said
that his school has never
had an accident. -While
classed are underway,
the rescue boat (af-
fectionately called the
'crash boat' by the in-
structors) is in constant
use and whistles are
blown to indicate to .a
sailor that he is out-of-
bounds.
The daytime program
of Levels 1,2 and 3 will be
held once in July and
again in August.
"This accomodates the
cottage people who may
only be up for one of the
summer months,"
Parsons said.
And if the student joins
the Goderich Sailing Club
upon completion of his
Level 3 training, he is
entitled to free and
unlimited use of the
Petrel sailboats.
