HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1980-06-18, Page 111 BY JASON AINSLIE With four Petrels, two lasers and one Abbott 22 sailboat, the Huron Sailing School, under the. direction of -Paul Par- sons, will continue its training program for the .third consecutive year. The :program, to commence July 14, will feature day classes, held four mornings a week for one wed: and evening classes, running two nights. per . week for two Weeks. Anyone can join, Other individually or in groups, by registering at - the recreation office throughout the summer. Paul Parsons is the instruction co-ordinator. His • job includes registration, public relations, catering to the needs of . the instructors and he is the go-between for. the . Town, the recreation board and the Goderich Sailing Club as well. The head instructress is ponelda Roberts and her co-workers are Christina McKillop and Evelyn Roberts. They will provide students with ample .on -shore training as well as many hours in the water. Although the in -water instruction is by far the greater part of the course, the theoretical uron Bailin. aspects of sailing, such as knots, and rules of the road, cannot be overlooked. Persons enrolling in the Level 1• course can expect to acquire a basic sailing ability, including familiarization with the boat, knots, safety, rights of way and the rigging and . derigging of a sailboat., In the Level 2 course, a higher competency of instruction is pursued. Students • learn how to spot thunderstorms and sandbars and will also become familiar with helm smanship, crewmanship and the many • commands that accompany each of those positions. Capsizing the boat is a drill that is stressed simply because it,can happen anywhere, anytime and in any wind. • Level 3 candidates are qualified to sail the lasers. And they will lean tosail in winds up to 15 knots. More sailing knots and hitches will be emphasized in this course. and the scope of ter- ' minology is widened. Parsons, who is a Goderich resident, said that his school has never had an accident. -While classed are underway, the rescue boat (af- fectionately called the 'crash boat' by the in- structors) is in constant use and whistles are blown to indicate to .a sailor that he is out-of- bounds. The daytime program of Levels 1,2 and 3 will be held once in July and again in August. "This accomodates the cottage people who may only be up for one of the summer months," Parsons said. And if the student joins the Goderich Sailing Club upon completion of his Level 3 training, he is entitled to free and unlimited use of the Petrel sailboats. There was a tie in third place between two teams that had 1231/2 points. They were Evelyn Galbraith` and Dawna Sproule, and Cathy McDonald , and Pat Stringer. On the East West side, two visiting sisters combined to _ win first place. Jeanne Scotchmer, of Niagra-on-the-Lake and Mary Wilkinson from Bowling Green, Ohio had 1181/2 points. In second place was Barb Howe and Marion Lane with 117 and in third •-was Jean. Cook and Verna Worthy with 1151/ . Midgets 4.
