Mrs. Bederman is now
trying to find a way to,
teach Deborah how to
type on an electric
typewriter.
Dave Reeve is
Deborah's com-
munications teacher and
he employs a system
known as "Blissym-
holies" to help her read,
write and converse. The
system, created by C.K.
Bliss, uses symbols as a
standard method of
communicating with
multi -handicapped,
asphasic, deaf, blind,
mentally retarded and
autistic persons at all age
levels. Reeve com-
municates with Deborah
via a color -coded
Blissymbol board at-
tached to a tray on her
wheelchair.
Using the Blissymbol
board, Deborah told the
Milton Tribune that she
goes to school each day
by taxi with two other
children (transportation
costs are abso bed by the •
Halton • Board of
Education). Deborah
said she enjoys music,
watching television and
making creative
Blissymbol projects
using sand in Mr. Reeve's
class.
Mrs. Scott writes to us
that some people here
will be particularly
pleased to know that
Deborah has now joined a
Brownie pack at her
school.'
"This has been her
ambition for a long time
and she is really
delighted," writes Mrs.
Scott.
Mr. and Mrs. Scott say
they are grateful to the
Ontario Society for
Crippled Children not -
only because of the part it
has played in helping
their youngest daughter
get the -best education
possible but also because
of the, the other benefits
made available through
Easter Seal proceeds.
When Deborah first
arrived in Canada with
her parents from Ireland
in the fall of 1972, . an
operation to free the
ligaments .in her upper
thigh was performed by
doctors at the Crippled
Children's Hospital in ..
Toronto, a, hospital
, supported by Easter Seal
funds. Easter Seal funds
also made it possible for
Deborah to attend the
Queen Elizabeth School
when she was living here
in Goderich and she is
able to goaway to camp
• each summer with 1,000
other physically disabled
children for two weeks
through Easter Seals as
well..
The support of the
community through the
Credit ,Valley Treatment
Centre has allowed Mrs.
Scott. to pursue her career,
as a real estate agent.
She now works part-time
with Mayrose Realty Ltd.
of Milton.
"We are exceptionally
lucky," admit Mr. and
_Mrs Scott _who._de.scribe
Milton residents as very
helpful and willing to
assist.
Deborah was the guest
of honor at the Easter
Seals Dinner and Dance
sponsored by the Milton
Rotary Club on March 28.
Her determination has
won her many friends
and : support from
everyone.
