Juniors get home field advantage
BY TD
The GDCI junior soccer
team wrapped up first
place in the Huron -Perth
Conference final stan-
dings `with a 2-1 victory
over Mitchell. That win
leaves the Vikings with
five wins and one tie in
their six game schedule,
and gives them home
field advantage in the
playoffs which •began
Tuesday when the
Vikings took on Central
Huron here in sudden -
death semi-final action.
If the Vikings won that
game, they will advance
to the finals •here
tomorrow (Thursday) at
2 p.m. against the winner
of the other semi-final
between Mitchell and
• Wingham.
T - Vikings dominated
a „here last
sday, 'espite the
clos'-ness of he -core.
Mitc` -IL's lone g'al came
in the first 30 seconds of
the game when a Viking
pass back 'to their own
goal accidentally went
into the net. From there
on, it was ail Goderich as
the Vikings , limited
` Mitchell to seveh 'shots on
net and held the ball in
the Blue Devils' end.
' The Vikings got strong
efforts from Dave
MacDonald, Joe
orrissey and Colin
("the Wall") Alexander.
Morrissey and. Karl
Krohmer, the Vikings'
leading goal scorer, got
the Goderich goals.
On theseason, the
junior Vikings, who are
coached by Randy
McLeod, scored 25 goals
while giving up only 10.
Karl Krohmer had nine
goals over the season,
followed by Mike
Wedlock who had seven.
Colin Alexander booted
three while Jim
MacDonald and Scott'
Collins had two each. Joe
Morrissey and Scott Bell
had the other Viking
goals.
'l'he senior Vikings
closed off a not nearly so
successful season with a
2-0 loss to Mitchell in the
second game Thursday.
Although coach Del
Almeida's Vikings won
only two while losing four
and finished sixth, out of
playoff contention,
several 'of their losses
were by only one goal.
The loss here to Mitchell
was typical; with. , t'ii:e
Vikings being unable to
capitalize on their good
chances while Mitchell
got -both their goals from
scrambles in front of the
Viking goal.
