we are Canadians?
During the election I I?ut
forward the concept of
Non'V iolerit_ Civilian
National Defence as an
alternative to increased
military spending for
defence against invasion
by another nation. While
such an approach cannot
guarantee that our homes
and loved ones will never
bear the brunt of an at-
tack, I think we must
consider it in the light of
the. alternative -
increasing dependence on
weapons of destruction
and playing the military
"defence" game.

neighbor to the South, the
other, ' our neighbor
across the North Pole. We
have the poor fortune to
be in the middle of any
ballistic missile bat-
tleground. The "arms
race" has been going on
for over 30 years. What
has it accomplished? The
"war to end all wars"
inaugurated a •eentury.
Which becomes in-
creasingly likely to see
our annihilation. Wars do
or
not end wars., they main people, Uell

property and in the
process create a fertile
Soil for hate and future
wars. If we want peace
and, - security, we will
have to try a different
path that the well-worn
one of ever incresing
military spending..
An interesting statistic
I saw recently indicated
that it . would take 18
billion dollars a year to
provide everyone who
lacks them with clean
water arid sufficient food,
shelter and clothing.
While millions lack these
necessities which most of
us in Canada take for
granted, the govern-
ments of our world spend
this ntu:Qh Money every
two ' weeks • for: weapone
and, warfare. Ina world.
of limited resources, it is
a choice between swords
or ploughshares. I would
choose ploughshares. I
believe we would be: wiser
to makea serlous com-
mitment to a fair sharing
of the world's resources
within Canada, 1 and
between nations than to
continue supporting the
strategy of "Mutually
Assured Destruction"
which is supposed to keep
the Russians and the
States from trying to
blow each other (and
everyone else) to bits.
As you can see, we face
some very serious
problems. Unfortunately
they won't go away if we
ignore etn and their
solutions4WiU not coxae
easily, Fortunately as.
Canadians we have many
opportunities to work for
solution,$. Diving under
repr.eszt
e,ative
democracy We have not
only opportunities but
responsibilities. Through
the process of elections
we shift a lot of that
responsibility onto the
shoulders of our local
MP's and the elected
government. It is im-
portant to know what we.
are getting when we vote.
During the election I
heard people saying that
"you are throwing your,.
vote away if you vale
NDP". I was even asked
why I bothered to run
since I "couldn't" win.

The Residents' Council
of the Manor have
decided to take part in the
Heart Jamboree on July

affair many nursing
homes in the province are
taking part in with the
proceeds going to the
Heart Association of
Ontario.
The residents are busy
making crafts and
ceramics to donate to the
Jamboree. They also plan
a Strawberry Tea and a
bake sale, with -a wishing
well, fish pond and
hopefully a fortuneteller!
For added en-
tertainment, they will
have Martha and Earl

HOW TO CHOOSE A LAXATIVE
When you need a laxative, a natural source
laxative is a wise choice. That's why so many
Canadians trust MetamuciV.
Metamucil works theway natural fiber
foods do, slowly forming the bulk that pro-
motes natural bowel action.
Try Metamucil powder in juice or water...or
sparkling, lemon -lime Instant Mix in
pre -measured packets and 'economical 150g
bottles.
