The Goderich Signal-Star, 1980-06-04, Page 3GEDC . recommends development of nature trail At its meeting last Friday, the Goderich Economic Development Committee (GEDC) passed a motion to recommend to Goderich Town Council that the Maitland' Valley Con- servation Authority, the Maitland Trail Association and Com - miss -toner of Works, Ken Hunter, on behalf of the municipality, work together to develop a nature trail in the woodlot area located in the Industrial Park and that these three groups be authorized to co-operate in -this development for the mutual benefit of all concerned. Constable r George Lonsbary and Chief Pat King accepted the plague on behalf of the Goderich force from Corporal A.D. Stern. and Constable J.D.M. Joyal of the RCMP.. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan) Renovations underway The renovations to the Judith Gooderham Memorial Poi-jr Will' be completed in mid-June and children can be splashing about in it by the time they get out of school for summer vacation. All that will remain the same is the old shell of the pool. The old pipes are being replaced, a new skimmer system in- stalled, and a new fence, deck, and ladders are being added. Activity weekend at Falls Reserve In conjunction with the Maitland Valley Con- servation Authority, Falls Reserve Con - .,servation Area wilt be offering an activity weekend June 5, 6 and 7. The program is an experimental one and activities will begin Friday evening and carry on through Sunday. Some of the activities weekend include; baseball games: a hor- seshoe tournament, campfires and sing songs, a campers smorgasbord, crafts and games for youngsters and films. Fifty per cent of the .cost will be picked up by the federal govern- ment, and 25 per cent will be paid by the provincial government. The Goderich taxpayer has to put up the other 25 per cent of the cost, about $15,625. the woodlot was a con- cern of -the Association and suggested that the various groups work together to organize a year round trail to be worked in with other trails presently op erating Tiler -can mittee adopted the minutes of a special meeting on March 5 with an amendment to the motion regarding the woodlot. The amended motion reads that the woodlot should be retained in its natural state and that the Goderich Economic Development Committee recommend to council the same. Council adopted this recommendation md wrote to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to advise the Authority of this. GEDC chairman, Dave Gower, told the committee that the Authority would assist the municipality where possible in developing the woodlot. It could be 4 ' multi-year project. In other business, the r- com mittee read correspondence from June Martene referred to it from council. This correspondence per- tained to the number of apartment buildings in town.... Mrs. Martene stated that she felt there were not enough people needing rental ac- com mo dation in Goderich and wanted to know if Goderich Town Council was encouraging new industry. A letter of resignation from GEDC member, Gus Chisholm, due to personal reasons, was accepted with regret by the committee. His replacement was tabled for further discussion. The committee passed a motion to support the report of Huron County Council regarding the future of rail tran- sportation in the province of Ontario. They decided to have the secretary forward a copy of that -report.-- to-- . the_ _Ontario Task Force which will be studying the question, including their support for the report and further stating that they strongly recommend the' im- portance of freight service in the Town of Goderich and that the freight level provided currently in the municipality not be decreased. The Commissioner of Works informed the committee that there were sufficient funds left in last year's budget to pay for a sign to be erected at the entrance to Industrial Park. Chairman Gower and councillor Elsa Haydon indicated to the com- mittee that they were working together to come up with a model for this sign.
