The choir will be performing in Goderich early in August when it tours the U.S. and Canada. Its visit here is being spon- sored by the Goderich Rotary Club, noted for promoting cultural events. English choir here for summer concerts BY JOANNE BUCHANAN On Thursday, August 7 the Burton upon Trent , Youth Choir from Staf- fordshire County, England will arrive in this town for two. weekend performances as part of a North American tour,... The choir, an 'A Kapella' choir made up of young people ranging in age from 16-23, is being sponsored in Goderich by the Rotary; Club, well- known for 'promoting cultural events such as London Symphony Orchestra concerts and student exchanges. While the • Rotarians themselves will take care of billeting most of the• choir members, they are also hoping that some members of this com- munity will open their homes to the visitors. Bed and breakfast billeting is required for each choir member for possibly as many as four days and four nights. The choir will arrive in Niagara Falls, New York from Toronto on Monday, July 21. From there, it will travel by bus to performances in Elkhart, Indianna, Lansing, Michigan, Bay City, Michigan and Goderich, returning to Manchester, England on August 11. After arriving in Goderich, the choir will perform , at Knox 'Presbyterian Church on Friday evening, August 8, On Sunday, August 10 it will perform duringthe regular morning worship service at St. Georg'e's Anglican Church. That evening itrwill perform in the Blyth Memorial Hall as part of the Blyth Summer Festival's program. The choir has a varied repertoire from early European music to the present day, from sacred to secular including items of folk, musical and modern. flavor. In ad- dition, a number of its members vary the choir program with in- termissions of 'group music'. Formed in 1968, the choir is made up of pupils, ex -pupils and young teachers of schools in and around Burton upon Trent. It performs mainly unaccompanied. The choir is no stranger to towns away from its native England. This will be the. third visit to the U.S. and Canada where it performed in New York, Washington DC, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Parkersburg, West Virginia, Toronto, Ellsworth, Maine, Boston and Red Bank, New Jersey.during a 1970 tour and in Avon, New York, Rochester, New York, Niagara Falls, New York, Bay City, Michigan, Lansing, Michigan, Harrisburg, Penns •lVania and Philadelphia during a 1974 tour: The choir has also toured extensively in Europe, performing in West Germany in: 1969, Denmark and Holland in • 1972, Denmark again in 1975 and Holland, Ger- many and Belgium in 1978. These tours have each - been carried; out where possible on a reciprocal hornestay or billet basis to spread international goodwill ° and un- derstanding among the youth of many nations. All concerts have been given without payment to the choir or its 'leaders and where funds have been raised, they have been donated ,,,1,q,,,, the church or charity named by the sponsors. Concerts have . varied from open air 'ones in U.S. summer camps and the City Square in Toronto to the Royal Festival and Royal Albert Halls in London, England. The choir has also performed on the BBC Radio in England, the National Radio Network in West Germany and on a. _ half-hour television. program in New York. Fox a short time the choir was the first world record holder in non stop choir -singing --25% hours. This record setting was part of the fund raising program for its 1974 U.S. tour. It kept the record for two years in the Guiness Book of Records. Since then the choir has raised funds in other ways so as to save its voices for its concert audiences. Present conductor of the choir is Michael Bates and chairman is Bert Evans.
