In fact, Wells Bently, Ontario Pension Superintendent, told a Canadian Pension Conference in Toronto that, "The terms of some pension plans are presented so vaguely that he is hard pressed to understand them him- self". Public knowledge is the first step in bringing this issue to the forefront. There is no reason the government cannot act immediately. SENIORS RECOGNIZED This is the tenth con- secutive year the Ministry of Community and Social' Services has set aside a special week to recognize the many contributions of seniors to the quality of life in Ontario. Co -sponsoring this annual event will be the Senior Centres' Association of Ontario. The theme for 1980 is an "Invitation to Par- ticipate" whereby seniors are encouraged and challenged to "Be at the centre of activity in your community" by joining a centre, volunteering their ser- vices, being on boards or committees and through other civic respon- sibilities and community activities. JAIL SURVEY A recent survey by Ontario's Corrections Ministry found that two- thirds to three-quarters of all cases`adinitted to jail waiting for bail or trial were eventually released without a jail sentence. The 18 month study was done in Ontario's 35' short-term jails where most of the remanded prisoners are sent. According to the Minister, Mr. Gordon Walker, a $600,000 provincial experiment giving social agencies the job of getting ,more prisoners, out on bail could help end `s,eri9us overcrowding in jails. The program, called bail verification, also ad- dresses theproblem of people kept in jail because they can't afford a small bail. The Ontario Govern- ment is also launching employment prugrams.to try to find jobs for 10,000 able-bodied but unem- ployed people on probation ftom prison who now cost taxpayers nearly $2 million a month yin' welfare.' More than 30,000 people are now serving probationary terms and "about half of them are -unemployed". HYDRO Ontario Hydro will pay about 40 percent more than current world prices for initial deliveries of uranium this year under a 40 -year contract signed in 1978 with Denison Mines Ltd. Signing of the $7 billion contracts with Denison and Preston was authorized by the Premier on February 28, 1978, over strong ob- jections from the ..op- position parties. The Legislature's select committee on Ontario Hydro Affairs has voted unanimously to resubmit its budget for 1980-81 without changes, althoygh the Board of Internal Economy wanted it to "consider further that section of the proposed budget dealing with legal, consulting and witness fees" and come back with an alternative budget.
