GDCI team shines at Huron -Perth and WOSSA

The GDCI track and
field team made a fine
showing at the Huron
Perth and WOSSA meets
held inLondon over the
last two weeks. •
At the VVOSSA meet,
eight local athletes
It was a real race to the finish in the senior girls 100 metre hurdles at the
Huron -Perth track and field championships held Thursday in London.

The Lakeport Steelers
got on the winning trrack
in Industrial League
fastball action winning
two games this week.
Last,Sunday the
Steelerbalsted the Hotel
Bedford 12-1 and Monday
they clipped. Gord Sports
6-5 with a run in' the
bottom of the seventh.
In their game against
Bedford Sunday the
Steelers made the out-
come evident in the first
inning scoring eight runs.
They added three more in
the fourth and a single in
the sixth to complete the.

Bruce Bowman led the
Whit assault on two
Bedford pitchers with
three hits in four trips to
the plate. He doubled in
the first inning, to score a
run, nailed ,a • two -run
homer in the fourth and
added a single in the fifth
inning. Tim McLean
added two hits including
a homer in the eight run
first innifi.
Hotel Bedford put
together three of their
four hits in one inning to
score their lone run in the
fifth. Brian MacKenzie
allowed just four hits in
picking up the win.
On Monday the Steelers
got a two -out single from
Frank Hagen in the
bottom of the seventh to
score MacKenzie with the
running run in the 6-5 win
over Gords Sports.
Gords trailed ' 5-4
heading into the seventh
but put together two
singles with two out to
score the tying run.
MacKenzie responded
in the Steeler half of the
seventh—w-i'th a leadoff
double. Gords pitcher
Dave Scholl then ap-
peared to have things in
hand striking out Ron
Miller and Carmen
Fielder while MacKenzie
watched from third base.
Hagen then slapped a
two -out single to produce
the winning run.
McLean led the
Steelers withthree hits
while MacKenzie added a
single and double.
Bob ' Riehl , had a fine
performance in a losing
cause nailing MacKenzie
for four singles in four at
bats. Dennis Williamson
had two hits.
MacKenzie and Wayne
Draper combined for the
win allowing five runs on
10 hits. Lakeport scored
their six runs on eight
'lits.
Fishers pick up wins
Fisher Builders picked
up two wins in Industrial
League play this week_
shading Canada Com-
pany 4-3. in extra inning
and outlasting McGees
11-8 in a slugfest Monday.
. Fishers took advantage
of three Company errors
and it was a. Company
error in the ninth inning
that led to the winning
run. Gerry Durst singled
to lead off the Fisher
ninth, was sacrificed to
second and `scored the
winning run on an error.
Canada Company held
- a 3-0 lead after four and a
half innings of play but
Fishers rebounded with a.
three-runrally of their
own in the bottom .of the
fifth to tie the game.
Fishers managed only
five hits in the game but
they put three together in
the fifth inning with two
errors to,score three runs
and tie the game. Dennis
Lebrun had two of the hits
with a run -scoring single
in the fifth and a double in
the seventh.
Rob MacDonald had
three hits for Canada
Company and Tom
O'Keefe chipped in with
two.
Doug Fisher pitched
four and a half inning sfor
Fisher before giving way
to John Verway who
picked up -the -win.
Fishers were forced
into extra innings again
Monday but they came
out on top of an 11-8 score
in a 29 hit slugfest.

in the loss.
finished in the top four
and qualified to compete
in the regional meet at
the University of Windsor
this Saturday. From that
meet, the' top five
finishers in each event
will advance to the All -
Ontario finals in Toronto,
on June 6 and.7.
Part of the "success of the
GDCI team this year is
due to the improved
facilities available
through the development
of the track complex at
the GDCI campus. The
other feature in ac-
counting for the success
of the local athletes was
the improved coaching
program headed by Phys.
Ed. instructor, Barb
Ottewell. Other track and
f'Cefiti coaches "intruded"
John Smallwood, Peter
Zankowski and Dick
Madge.

the senior boys 110 metre
hurdles and Sandra Rowe
in . the senior girls' shot
put.

Jim Costello in the Junior
boys 110 metre hurdles
and Sandra Rowe in the
senior girls discus.
Youngblut-Leggatt hot team

Steve Youngblut and
his single -man crew, Al
Leggatt are quickly
becoming the team to
beat in the spring series
of Goderich Sailing Club
Races.
Steve skippered his
Niagara 32 to a well-
earned victory over a
field of five other boats.
He finished with a
corrected time of'1 .25.24, ' Goderich
followed by Ken Bauer at
1:30.48 and Ken Dawson
at 1:32.29. Just out of
third place by less than
three minutes was Bob
Allen, who has become a
real contender in the past
few weeks.
The club is still open to
new members. Our
membership fees are low
and you will enjoy the
sailing companionship.

CLEAR OUT SALE
Of remaining '1979 bikes
At the *O, SA meet the
22 athlete contingent was
headed Jay' Debbie Mit-
chelmore and Sue Muffitt
who both racked up first
place finishes in one
event and finished fourth
in second events.
, Debbie was the winner
in the 800 metre run with
an excellent time of 2:24.7
and Sue won the discus
with a throw of 27.51
metres. Mitchelmore was
fourth in the 400 metres
with a time of 64.3
seconds and Muffitt was
fourth in the javelin with
a throw of 29.03L[netres.
Robin MacDonald had
a second place finish in
the Western Ontario meet
with a throw of 26.60
metres in the dicsus and
Toe Melady threw 40.0.8
metres to finish second in
the midget boys discus.
The brother and sister
duo of Sandra and Mark
Rowe recorded similar
third place marks in the
senior girls and junior
boys shot put and discus
respectively, with throws
of 9.50 metres for Sandra,
and 39.45 metres for
Mark.
Rosie O'Keefe had a

time of 13.3 seconds in the
midget girls 100 and
Jenny More ran the
senior girls 100 metres in
17.3 seconds to record
fourth place .finishes in
the WOSSA meet.
Creditable sixth place
finishes against tough
competition in the
WOSSA meet . went to
Heather Minielly with a
jump of 1.47 metres in
midget girls high jump,
Janice McClinchey with a
throw of 27.89 metres in
the junior girls' discus,
and Mike Evans in the
midget boys 1500 metre.
