And though there is rib regulation ring with a bell and clock, lack of these details has not thwarted the enthusiasm of some 25 youngsters. In fact, as they near the end of an eight week program which started April 15, many of the pre -14 year old boys are showing great strides of progress. The course is sponsored by the Optimist Club of Goderich in con- junction with the Recreation Board and for a small fee, boys aged nine to 13 can try their hands at this contact sport. The instructors are Gerrard Bedard and Shawn Finnegan along with some assistants. Finnegan, who has been boxing with a Toronto club for five years, says the first step toward learning proper methods is to-etiminate anyfear-ofbeing-hit: - He agrees that often this is easier said than done but adds that the earlier one starts boxing, the sooner he concentrates less on being hit and more on hitting. 1f this sounds alarming, be assured that the instxttctors teach the boys how to jab effectively at their opponents without following through in the punch. Each boxer also wears protective head and mouth gear as well as the gloves. From outside the makeshift ring, a circle in the centre of the St. Mary's School gym, the instructor shouts, warnings, advice and rules in a course voice. Usually'there is only one bout at a time and when a boy is not in the ring, he can work out on a punching bag or with a skipping rope, both of which help improve alertness and timing. According to the organizers, the eight week program will act as a gauge to determine the level of in- terest for this winter sport. If enough interest is stigma,. it is probable that a full course will be planned for 1980- 81 that will start next fall. When the hands are quicker than the eyes, one solution is to hide the eyes. These'young boxers are learning the basics of boxing in an eight week course sponsored by the Goderich Optimist's Club in conjunction with the Recreation Board. If the program is a success, then boxing may come to Goderich in the , fall as a winter sport. (Photo by Jason Ainslie) Never trust a southpaw! One boxer in the eight week basic training program receives an unexpected blow from his opponent as the two engage in a practice bout at St. Mary's school. The course, which is nearly completed now, was to gauge the level of interest in a winter boxing program possibly to start next fall.
