oemakers celebrate 25th wedding anniversary in Saltford

Sehgemalcer of Saltford
F:elehrated their 25th
wedding aanijversary on
Saturday, May .24.
.It -was in 1952 that
Helen .DeRuyter " and
Gerry Schoemaker, both
natives, of Holland came
to Canada. They met in
Canada for the first time
and on May 27, 1955 they
were married in the
Christian Reformed
son, Fred, is in Prince
George, B.C. and the
oldest daughter, Marjory
is in Stratford.
At 6 p.m., 77 relatives
and guests attended the
anniversary dinner in
Saltford Valley Hall with
the Schoemakers' son
acting as Master of
Ceremonies.
During the dinner, Mr.
Schoemaker's youngest
sister, Mrs. Guther of

lived in Goderich for 41/2
years and then purchased
a home in Saltford where
they still reside.-

visited with her folks in
Holland in February of
this year. At that time she
attended the 25th wed-
ding anniversary of her
sister and then ant,
nounced that she and her -
husband would be
celebrating their 25th
anniversary in May. Mrs.
Schoemaker was indeed
pleased to know that her
mother, Mrs. DeRuyter
of Holland was coming to
attend her anniversary
celebrations but 'it was a
complete, surprise when
her sister, Mrs. Ernst of
Holland arrived to join in
celebrating the special
occasion with them too.
Both guests will be
remaining for a few
weeks' visit.
The Schoemaker's five
children consisting of
three boys and two girls,
were all home for the
anniversary. The oldest.
Hamilton, on behalf of the
Schoemaker relatives of
Hamilton and Goderich,
presented Mr. and Mrs.
Schoemaker with an
envelope of money and
Mrs. Schoemaker's
sister, Mrs. Ernst of
Holland brought
greetings from her
family in Holland and
presented gifts. Mrs.
Schoemaker's mother
presented them with a
beautiful hand em-
broidered tablecloth.
At 8 p.m. they held
Open House at Saltford
Valley Hall which was
attended by ap-
proximately 180
relatives, friends and
neighbours " who signed
the guest book. The
evening program in-
cluded many humorous.
skitsand sing -songs and
visiting among the
guests.
Guests were present
from Holland, Prince
George, and Dawson
Creek, B.C.; Hamilton,
Smithville, Guelph,
Goderich area, Clinton
area, Blyth area,
Moorefield, Brussels and
Saltford.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerry
Schoemaker thanked all
relatives, friends and
neighbours for coming
and being a part of the
gathering, for best wishes
received, for the
beautiful floral and
personal gifts and for
sharing their special
,event with them.
Special congratulations
are extended from
Colborne Corner on this
your 25th anniversary
and may you both enjoy
many more years of
happy married life
together.

The theme of the May
meeting of Tiger Dunlop
Women's Institute held in
Colborne Township Hall,
Thursday, May 22, was
"Gardening" with the
roll call being "exchange
of plants or seeds".
President, Mrs. R.
Buchanan, welcomed all
and after the opening
exercises, the secretary,
Mrs. Allan Stoll, read the
minutes of last meeting
and correspondence was
attended to.
Members received
programs for the new
term and were advised of
the Huron West W.I.
district meeting to be
held in Goderich on
Monday, May 26.
The president thanked
all who helped make the
salad luncheon and card
party on April, 30 a suc-
cess and also thanked all
who had helped with the
birthday party at
Huronview on Wed-
nesday, May 21.
Mrs. Molly Sutton,
delegate from,. Tiger
Dunlop W.I. to the 32nd
annual officers' con-
ference in Waterloo, gave
a very interestingreport
of the conference, em-
phasizing the need for
leaders who can keep- in.
tune with the times. She
said Institute work
presents an interesting
' challenge to the members
and while much has been
accomplished -by the
Women's Institute over
the years, there is a great
deal to be done and
members must press on.
She thanked the
Institute for sending her
as a delegate.
It was agreed that the
Sunshine Sister banquet
would be Thursday, June
12 at 8:30 p.m. in
Dungannon, catered to by
the Dungannon
Women's Institute.
The Colborne Central
School graduation dinner
will be held Tuesday,
June 24 in' Colborne
Township Hall and will be
catered to by Tiger
Dunlop W.I. .
The president then
introduced the guest
speaker, Mrs. Edith
Argyle, who gave a very
informative_ -talk on
gardening with many
do's and don'ts. As this is
the gardening season,
this valuable information
will be put into use by the
members for better
gardens, lawns and
flow ers.
Mrs. James Horton
thanked the speaker and
presented her with a gift
of a lovely potted
geranium.
After the meeting
members enjoyed lunch
served by the committee
of Mrs. Eric Reaburn,
Mrs. Guy Emmerson and
Mrs. Gordon Kaitting and
then exchanged a
splendid selection of
plants or seeds.

Legion holds annual elections

The May general
meeting of Goderich
Legion Branch 109 was
also the annual meeting
for the Legion year which
ends as of June 1, 1980.
Nominations and elec-
tions were the highlight of
this meeting. They were
conducted by the Deputy
Zone Connmander,
Comrade Bob Chapman.
Comrade Walter
Sheardown was elected
unopposed as the new.
president of Branch 109'
for the coming Legion
year, June 1, 1980 to June
1,• , 1981. Comrade Bill
Burke was elected as the
new first vice-president
and Comrade Claire
Bedard was acclaimed as
second vice-president.
Comrade Stan Youngblut
was returned as Branch
secretary and Comrade
Don McArthur was
returned as treasurer for
another year. Comrade
Roy Mugford will serve
as immediate past
president.

follows: poppy, Harold
Carroll; sports, Eleanor
Worsell; house, Ted
Hewitt; sick and welfare,
Ray Barker; public
relations, Neil Shaw;

meeting, will be mem-
bers to hold the following
positions in the branch:

means, community
services, service bureau,
membership, canteen,
bingo, Sgt. -at -arms,
Jubilee Room, assistant
secretary, assistant
treasurer, and. the
chaplains.
Two 'applications for
membership in Branch
109 were accepted as
ordinary members,
namely D. E. Carman
and A. R. Brewer, being
veterans. Five associates
(son or daughter of a.
veteran) were also ac-
cepted as members of
Branch 109, namely D.
Wolterbeek, L. Million,
M. Jones, L. D. Moore
and H. A. Gervais.
Twelve associates were
installed in a brief
ceremony conducted by
Deputy Zone Commander
Chapman, assisted by
Branch President, Roy
Mugford and „Sgt. -at -
Arm s, Alvin Blackwell.
Comrade Clare

chairman, reported that
the foundation plantings
at the front of the hall had
been -completed.
Sick and Welfare
chairman, Comrade Ray
Barker reported that the
Branch had been sad-
dened by the loss of six
comrades in the past
month.
The Vimy banquet saw
six Vimy veterans
present 1 as well as 16
World War I veterans,
eight wives and two
daughters.
During April, Easter
visitations were made to
29 sick or disabled
veterans. Cards and -or
gifts or visitations were
part of Comrade Barker's
program to contact 16
members on the sick list:

On June 16 and 17,
Grade,. 7 pupils from
Colborne Central will be
camping overnight at-
Camp''Menesetung.
On June 19 and 20,
Grade 8 pupils will be
having an educational
trip to Toronto. They will
be staying at the York
University Campus and
touring the harbour and
Toronto Metro Zoo. They
will also be attending the
Bluejays' ball game at
the Stadium on Thursday.
On Friday they will visit
Queen's Park and the
Ontario Legislature, the
Ontario Science Centre
and Ontario Place.
Graduation ceremonies

This Thursday, May 29,
Colborne Central School
pupils will be par-
ticipating in the Inter -
School West Regional
Track and Field meet at
Brookside School from

SOCIAL NEWS
On the National News
at 11 p.m. Monday
evening, May 26, an in-
teresting item from
Frobisher Bay showed
John Amigoolik in regard
to TV taping. John was in
Goderich several years
ago learning to be a pilot
at Sky Harbour ,Airport
and boarded at Tiger
Dunlop Inn. This was in
the late 60's and very
early 70's when the
Government was un-
dertaking to help train
Eskimo lads to be pilots.

after visiting with his
parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Eric Reaburn and family
for several days.

and is to be followed by a
fish fry and dance in the
Legion Hall. Zone golf
will be held on June 22. If
interested contact the
sports chairman, Eleanor
Worsell.
It was moved and
seconded that the Branch
donate ' an efficiency
award to be presented to
a local air cadet at their
annual inspection and
awards day on June 7.
Donations were made
to the Laketown Band
and to the Salvation
Army as a result of
requests from these
organizations.
The album committee
chairman, Neil Shaw,
gave a full report on ,the
plans and progress of the
committee to produce by
mid-August, a single
record album (featuring
the men's male chorus,
the Harbouraires) , of
songs and sound effects
from World Wars I and II.
The Branch also reaf-
firmed its financial
support of this project.
