Two get merit awards Dan Murphy and Brutie Sully of Goderich were appropriately pleased upon receiving two Regional Awards of Merit recently for their efforts in bringing the London Symphony Orchestra to Goderich. The award, presented by the Symphony, is being presented annually to regional sponsors who bring the Symphony to their respective com- munities, and who give a great deal of their valuable time and effort in doing so. Dan Murphy received the award on behalf of the Gdderich Rotary Club, which has continually demonstrated its support for the L.S.O.'s regional concerts. Mr. Murphy has devoted his abilities as an organizer and promoter during the past year, and as president of the Goderich Rotary Club, he has been responsible for three concerts put on during the 1979-80 season. Also receiving an award was Bruce Sully of the Goderich Sully Foundation. He has been a mainstay in the promotion of Symphony concerts by helping to 'underwrite a majority of the concert expenses. At the special reception Thursday, May 8 in London's Centennial Hall, Andre Pettigrew, past president of. the L.S.O.'s Board of Big garage sale plan for Ashfield A monstrous garage, auction and bake sale is being planned by the Recreation Committee of Ashfield Township. The committee members who have been appointed Ipy township council are Herb Wilkins, Clarence Doherty, Cleason Martin, Clete Dalton, Randy Kerr, Dianne Park, Denise Dalton, Murray Irvin, Kathy Olson who acts as secretary, and two council members, Grant Curran and John Austin who acts as, chairman. 16 CAN CANCER BE BEATEN? The members are enthusiastic about sponsoring ball, soccer and a program 'co- ordinator for the Ashfield schools if they wish to -participate in programs. Nine girls' teams are organized to play ball this season, six from Ashfield Township. Men's slowpitch is organized again, -andsoccer is becoming ,more popular each season. The seven ball diamonds which are used are maintained by the township. Brookside and Kingsbridge • schools donate the use of their diamonds for the summer as do Petrie's at Port Albert and Donald Simpson at North Ash- field. 'I.he town township diamonds at Dungannon and at Ashfield Park are used extensively. The sale will be held in the Township Shed, June 14 and any committee member may be con- tacted for information. New or used articles or baking are welcome. Mr. Pettigrew remarked that "The Sully Foun- dation points out the need for active financial support in bringing the Symphony to the regions of southwestern Ontario." "The Foundation's kindness has enabled many people to enjoy the Symphony, an op- portunity that would not otherwise have been. possible without its support." The London Symphony is presently embarking on an increased drive for, regional sponsorship, hoping to add '-'tot„ its present concerts in the various towns and smaller cities Of the area. In the past, the L.S.O. has performed some 43 concerts to, audiences of 27,000 total in the region. It maintains a com- plement of 25 full-time and 35 part-time musicians as well as a small administration and production staff. The full- time musicians form an ensemble named . S•IN!- FONIA. The current regional campaign includes the full-time services. ' of a Regional, Development -Officer, created by the L.S.O. to serve all the .needs ' of . the many regions in southwestern Ontario. ' A rounded season of -"pops'„., and "main concerts" are included in the upcoming. regional season. All in all, an exciting year for both the London Symphony Orchestra and the residents of southwestern Ontario. The guest speaker Kitchener -Wilmot MPP John Sweeney was of the oDinIon. Now they have changed their tune and realize Jack was right." before Bob McKessick's private bill on unfair hydro rates for' farmers was to come before the House, Bill- Davis in- structed Ontario Hydro to eliminate the differential. Sweeney said the rate for rural has been higher by 29 percent, but, would become equal as of September 1. In the annual election - of officers, Bernard Benn of Lucan was, named president replacing Ian McAllister of Zurich. When asked about 'his length of service as Liberal Association president, Ian McAllister replied, _,..-"I have just completed seven years of a one year term." Joe Hogan of Exeter is the new executive vice- president, Ken Keller of Goderich is the treasurer and Karen Pfaff, Exeter -is secretary. Vice-presidents are Muriel Murphy, Goderich; Wilson Hodgins, Lucan; George Walker, Strathroy; Sweeney talked about the role of members of Parliament in opposition. He said,. "We are sup- posed. to play a critical role and that is difficult. But, we do make vital statements to show - in a concrete and tangible way that we can be positive as well as critical." The guest speaker criticized the April '22 provincial budget saying, "Davis described it as the best budget of the decade. It did nothing . for unemployment or the high interest nates." "The Liberal party has put together. an Emergency Interest Relief plan. We are willing, to,Y's d or fall on' the princip�behind it, Sweeney continued.
