Sound of Goderich
features bands, singers
The Sound of Goderich
'80 (third annual concert)
to be held at the G.D.C.I.
Auditorium, Tuesday,
May 27, 8:15 p.m., will
feature the Craigellen
Singers, Laketown Band,
Teen Tones and the
Harbouraires.
The Goderich
Laketown Band, now in
its;, thirteenth year of
service to the
municipality, will
provide the instrumental
music. The band will be
under the direction of Mr.
Hugh McGregor, a music
teacher at the G.D.C.I.
Mr. McGregor, a native
of _Windsor, -Ontario via a_,_.
graduate of the Faculty
of Music, University of
Western Ontario, and
Althouse Teachers'
College, London.
The band will present a
varied program ranging
from the mysterious
strains of Henry Man-
cini's Pink Panther to the
familiar sounds of
several Stephen Foster
melodies.
"The Sound of
Goderich '80" will launch
another busy summer
season for the band's
personnel. In addition to
•-----con•ducting and par-
""' ticipating in the popular
Sunday evening Harbour
Park Concerts, the band
is booked for a number of
area parades. The
Laketown Band is happy
to welcome back Joan
Coulter, French horn;
Nancy Hearn, trombone;
Ernie McMillan, trumpet
and Gary Peters, flute.
They are all university
students who have
returned to bolster the
ranks for the summer
months.
The Harbouraires is a
group of men organized
for the enjoyment of
music some 35 years ago
by the late George
Buchanan.
The Harbouraireg have
been quite active down.
through the years, both
locally and in-
ternationally, travelling
as far as New York City
to sing.
They are now under the
directorship of Mr. Lorne
Dotterer and the mem-
bership of about 25 men
from all walks off life
__meet _.every Sunday
practice.
They are in the midst of
a very busy year. On May
31, they will take part and
sing a solo number in
Hamilton Place,
Hamilton, Ontario. At
this time, 20 choirs or 500
men will be on stage in
massed song. Also, they
have been rehearsing all
winter songs for a record
to be taped on June 7. -
This record consists of
a lot of old wartime songs
which have been
professionally arranged
for the group. The record
will be on sale in the fall.
The ' group is always
4very thankful for the
support shown by„ hhe
people of Goderich and
surrounding area and
looks forward to this
continued support.
In reviewing the ac-
tivities of the Craigellen .
Singers since, Sounds of
Goderich '79, they have
been singing and en-
tertaining in a great
variety of situations.
Anniversaries were
important singing events
in 1979: from the O.E.S.
Silver Anniversary off
Bluewater Chapter with
their large banquet in
North Street Church to
the big variety concert
for Auburn's 125th bir-
thday party (in , a beer
tent!)
Also included in their
list were church an-
niversaries, the Autumn
Cancer Banquet for
southwestern Ontario,
Huron Women's
Teachers' meeting, Lions
Ladies' Night in Brussels.
A "first" for them last
to year was--partici.Patiag-in--
the }wedding ceremony
for the daughter of one of
our singers.
The Christmas season
was busy for them as
well, first with the Blyth
Theatre 'Concert and
several Christmas
parties. In January they
provided special music at
the Huron -Perth UCW
Rally and later this
Spring they sang at two
special Easter services in
Walton and Goderich.
All these events require
quite a variety of music,
and so their repertoire
grows as will. Now they
are preparing for the
Sounds of Goderich 1980
and in the same week the
Stainers' Ladies' lun-
cheon.
Whether the Craigellen
• Singers are performing
before a large audience
or a small group of Senior
Citizens' at Maitland
Manor, their purpose
remains the same -- the
"Joy of singing" and "the
entertainment of their
listeners".
Teen Tones getting
new stage uniforms
The Goderich Teen
Tones will bewearing
their new uniforms for
the first time when they
participate in the "Sound
of Goderich" Concert on
May 27th.
They have prepared a
varied program which
they are sure everyone
will enjoy. This will be
Lots of
seniors
ZURICH - One of the
highest percentage of
senior citizens in Ontario
is a unique feature of
Huron County, according
to Louise Marritt.
Mrs. Marritt, from the
University of Guelph's
Outreach program told
the Zurich and district
Chamber of Commerce,
that over 20 per cent of
the population of Huron
are seniors.
She explained that the
University of Guelph has
a interst in rural areas
and for the past four
years_ has heen_able_ta
offer service to seniors in
Huron and Halton
counties through the
Rural Development
Outreach program.
The two counties were
chosen beCause of their
contrasts. Balton is
heavily influenced by
surrounding large urban
areas and Huron is one of
the few counties in
Ontario which doesn't
have a major
metropolitan centre.
Mrs. Marriett ex-
plained the Outreach
involves a number of long
and short term projects
for senior citizens, such
as planning activities and
taking part in the public
participation portion of
the implementation of
township secondary
plans.
the third time the choir
has sung in the annual
event. However, eleven of
its29 members will be
performing with the
group for the first time.
On. May 23-25 the Teen
Tones plan to attend a
music camp weekend at
Camp Ambassador near
Owen Sound.' This has
been another annual
highlight for the choir
during its six years of
singing.
Assisting the director,
Irla Stewart, as coun-
sellors for the weekend
will be Lois McGill, a
choir manager; Beth
Wark, accompanist; Lou
Bundy ,and Elizabeth
Kruspe, parents.
After two days of
singing, horseback
riding, hiking, . roller
skating and more singing
the Teen Tones should be
in rare form for the
concert on Tuesday
night!
Over the past years the
choir has sung at many
Church"- and community
functions in Goderich and
district. In 1979 they
competed in the. London
Kiwanis Music F'estival'
where they were awarded
first prize with 87 marks.
On two occasions they
have participated as a
troubadour group at the
CNE in Toronto.
Toronto.
All proceed' from
singing are 'used for the
purchase of music and
travelling expenses. New
uniforms and camp dues
are paid for by the
members themselves. All
leaders donate their time
on a volunteer basis.
The Goderich Teen
Tones would appreciate
your support of the
"Sound of Goderich"
concert on May 27th and
are sure you will enjoy an
evening of home town
entertainment!_
