Life Award that was presented to Hellen Allen, creator of Today's Child, on May 10 in Ottawa. The award was presented to Allen In recognition of her contribution to the development of respect and appreciation for the dignity and worth of human life,. (photo by Dave Sykes) Regard with suspicion Dear Editor, This letter is in reply to C.F. Barney, whose letter appeared under your title "Crocodile tears' in ,the Apri123 issue, It seems that Jehovah's Witnesses thrive on abuse and persecution as it makes them only believe more firmly that they are in 'the Truth'. However, when people try to ex- press genuine concern for their . salvation, they seem to find .this more difficult to deal with. As Mr. Barney shows, he doesn't believe our concern, i.e. accusing us of 'crocodile tears'. This is not surprising, as he no doubt • thinks us of 'the. Devil' and therefore regards everything we say with suspicion, at least. You may notice lie never mentions our names in answering letters. This 'is' not a coincidence I a"m ' sure. Mr. Barney says he is happy to be identified as one of Jehovah's (Christian) Witnesses. He uses those brackets by the way! They used to claim to be the happiest people on earth. However, they haven't claimed this very recently to my knowledge. Why? Maybe because it isn't the truth. There is some evidence, I could quote 'some studies and will be glad. to supply to any interested, that a much higher percentage of Jehovah's Witnesses suffer from mental illness than the rest of the population. Even Wat- chtower headquarters in Brooklyn have expressed concern according to a Dr. Montague. Mr. Barney is surely aware of this problem as well, being a ,more . senior member of his congregation. These study results are hardly surprising as a Jehovah's Witness cannot trust anyone outside their organization as he might be of 'the Devil'. This would be"all right health - rise if they could freely express their feelings within their organization, but there are so many man made. rules, that it must be difficult for them to openly express some genuine doubts, about even very minor issues. Mr. Barney quotes Isaiah 1:1.8: 'Come now and let us reason together'. Well, could he reason an answer to Jesus saying at John 2:19 'Break down this temple, and in three days I will raise it up'. John 2:21 'But he was talking about the temple of his body'. If Mr. Barney can explain this, I believe it will expose to all, the 'reasoning' that the Watchtower Society uses and whether it is of Jehovah or not! If he refuses to explain this scripture, maybe we could also draw a con- clusion. • Yours sincerely, Martin Foster Betty Allen receives ProLife honor E very year the Pro Life Alliance honors some outstanding Canadian who has made a major contribution in promoting respect for human life. The person is chosen from outside, the Pro -Life movement - for their achievements which are complementary to our cause. This year's recipient is Helen Allen. The Pro -Life Award was established to remember the Petition of One Million which was presented to Parliament in 1975 to ask the Government to give the unborn child the same protection as any other human being. It was the largest petition in Canada's history. Tt wac awarded to Jean Vax ier in 1977 for his work with the mentally handicapped. In 1978 it was awarded to the late William Kurelek, the well-known Canadian artist for his support of respect ,for Life through his art and by his words and deeds. It was renamed the William Kurelek Life Award to honor him and his wife Jean accepted it on his behalf. In 1978 the Award was given to Dr. Balfour Mount of the Royal Victoria Hospital's Palliative Care Unit, Montreal. Helen Allen is the originator of Today's Child, a newspaper feature which has led to May's for family In an attempt to stress the positive role the family plays in our lives, the Ontario Government has proclaimed May as Family Unity Month. During the month, people are being en- couraged to set aside special times to do meaningful things together as families. Agencies, religious in- stitutions and schools are also, being asked to organize special events for families. The 'Honourable Margaret Birch, Provincial Secretary for Social Development said, "by showing our families we really care in May, we can enjoy the benefits all year round." "In recent years," she said, "considerable media attention has been focused on such issues as divorce rates and it- cidents of child abuse. We sometimes overlook the hundreds of thousands of healthy family' units in Ontario that act as the mortar holding our social structure together. "Family Unity Month is not intended to sweep bad news about families under the rug", said Mrs. Birch. "On the contrary, we hope it will stimulate discussion on all aspects of family life in an effort to help us better un- derstand what it is that makes the family work. dies end Gentlemen!! auidtU'1i Cnt1 lie, • / NV GODERICH'S NEW AND.EXCITING MEN'S WEAR STORE CORDIALLY INVITES YOU TO COME IN AND SEE THEIR FINE SHOWING OF MEN'S APPAREL FEATURING: MERIT SUITS NASH PANTS ARROW SHIRTS WI"N A $5OO.011 GIFT CERTIFICATE WITH MINIMUM $15,()() PURCHASE DRAW TO TAKE PLACE .JUNE 14, 1980 36 THE SQUARE GODERICH PHONE: 524-4312 STORE HOURS MON. - THI'RS. 9:00.11::30 FRIDAY 9:00 • 9:00 SATURDAY 9:00 - 5:30 i The month will also give us time to reflect on our own role in our own families." The province is now holding a series of regional conferences on the family. Ontario residents are encouraged to make their views on the family known to government, agencies and institutions which support the family. the adoption of more than 10,000 Ontario children. Most of them were of mixed face, or with physical disabilities, or of ages not readily adop- table. Today's Child began in The Toronto Telegram and is now produced and circulated by the Ontario Ministry of Community and Social Services. The combination picture - story of a child needing adoption is carried by 22 'dailies and 155 tyeeklies throughout the province. It has had amazing results in placement of big families. Television is also contributing to this wonderful work of ap- pealing graphically to people to open their hearts and homes to parentless children. CFTO-TV in Toronto launched "The Family Finder" in late 1969 at Miss Allen's suggestion. Offered without cost to other Ontario stations, it is seen on 12 across Ontario. Helen Allen had no thought of appearing before the TV cameras herself but the producers had other ideas and so a new facet of a lengthy career began. In recognition of her service to children, Miss Allen was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1971. Earlier she received a citation from Premier John Robarts at a special Queen's. Park ceremony on behalf of the gover- nment and people • of Ontario "in recognition of your achievement in promoting the adoption of children." She has also been honored by the Canadian Public Relations Society, the Sertoma Club (men's service club) and the Soroptimist Club (women's service club). Daughter and gran- ddaughter of Presbyterian ministers, Helen Allen joined The Telegram on graduation from the University ,of Toronto. During her years on the paper she did almost everything there is to do in the editorial department of the paper. She has been general reporter, movie critic, women's editor, features editor, political writer. She has covered royal tours, inauguration of U.S. presidents, leadership conventions of Canadian political parties and Ontario and Canadian election campaigns. Interesting as those assignments were, she says none of them have given her the satisfaction she has found in helping children find parents. • Helen Allen has travelled three times to the Far East to act as escort to children coming from Vietnam and Korea to adoption homes in Ontario.
