pears in front of several
children and announces
that he is a ghost. "I tell
photographers. it is
perfectly alright if they
want to take pictures of
me, but there really isn't
any point, is there?
Everybody 9 knows you
can't photograph a
ghost."
The ghost proceeds to
explain to the children

that he is Robert Service,
and has come to recite his
poetry. He begins with
Bessie's Boil" and
continues for over an
hour with such famous
ve#se of Service's like,
."Shiela", "The Shooting •
'of Dan McGrew", "The
Pines", "The Cremation
of Sam McGee",. and .
"Wh'ere are you Going,
Young Fellow my Lad",
. The children sit,
captivated by the ghost's
Scottish brogue, and find
themselves dreaming of
the Yukon and Canada's
northwest.
The ghost really isn't a _
ghost at all, but
professional actor
Charles Hayter, 52.
Hayter • keeps the
memory of British -born
poet Robert Service alive
by touring back and forth
across Canada twice a
year entertaining,
schoolchildren and other
groups with Ms one-man
show, "A Taste of Robert
Service". He has also
been to Australia with the
show.
During the summer of
1978, Hay ter recited daily
in the garden of Robert
Service's cabin"' in
Dawson City, This is his
eighth year doing the
presentation.
During the past few
weeks, Hayter has en-
tertained many groups in
'°Huron County, including
Central Huron Secondary
School and the Legion in
Clinton, Huronview,
Colborne Central School,
and Brookside school.
"1 feel a kind of em-
pathy with Service. After
all, I was born close to
where he was born
(Hayter was born in
Liverpool), I also moved
to Scotland at a young
age, then finally em•
migrated to Canada "
says Hayter who is a
radio and television actor,
in Toronto when he isn't
on the road as the ghost of
Robert Service.
Hayter never did meet
the famous poet, who died
in France in 1958 at the
age of 84. but it certainly
seems. like he knew him.
and while he i's'vn stage it
certainly seems like his is
him.
